What's the best aftermarket air cooler for evga GTX 480? Also comment on my OC/temps?

I've been looking at getting an aftermarket cooler for my evga 480.

Currently, my 480 is at 820 core, 2180 memory and at 1.138. It idles at 51c. Is this pretty much the max overclocks a 480 can get? What are some other speeds the 480 got to?

However, furmark at full load went up to 102c. Way too high? What's the 480's max safe temp?

I think I want to get a third party air cooler now. What do you guys think? I'm pretty sure in real life situations, it will never go up to 102c, but I think an aftermarket cooler is a good idea.

Which one is currently the "best" solution? I WOULD like an all-in-one solution that comes with both the heatsink/fan, and not a passive cooler where I need to buy another fan.

edit: edit: looks like I'm getting AC's accelero xtreme plus, but NCIX nor newegg canada carries them!

I would say those temps. are normal for the oc and voltage you are using. My EVGA 480 would hit those temps. when I had the stock cooler as well, I actually hit 105C running Furmark Extreme Burn Mode. Since I installed the Zalman VF3000F, I reduced that to 69C., maximum. Normal gaming tops out in the mid 50's now, with the stock cooler it went into the 80's.
So I can certainly recommend the Zalman based on my own results. But there are several other good coolers as well.

I usually buy from NCIX and Newegg Canada. NCIX did not have the Zalman yet, but Newegg does, where I purchased mine.

As far as the Accelero is concerned, it is an excellent cooler, but being in Canada, you would currently have to source one out from Arctic Cooling or a US supplier, and pay the added shipping costs and duty for it.
If you get the AC cooler, you have to attach separate sinks to the ram and vrm's, and they supply a thermal adhesive, which can be rather permanent if the card ever needs an rma or if you wish to change it later. Alternatively, you would have to use some stick-on thermal pads which vary in quality and bond strength. The Zalman comes with an excellent one-piece finned heat plate which bolts securely to the card, and is totally reversible. After fitting separate heatsinks to many cards over the years, I much prefer the one-piece heat plate which is similar to what Nvidia uses on the card now.

Check out some reviews, here is one comparing the AC and the Zalman:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...3000,2784.html

Keep in mind that I am not saying that the cooler I happen to be using is "the best", because it simply isn't. I don't like to use that term regardless. There are a lot of guys on this forum using several different coolers on the 400 and 500 series Fermi's that are all happy with their results. The Zalman, the Accelero, at least two from Thermalright: the Spitfire and the Shaman, and the Gelid Icy Vision are all represented here and on other forums.
Read some more reviews and forum posts, then determine if you can get the cooler you decide on easily without having to pay high shipping costs and duty.

Thanks for the infos.

I guess I'll get the VF3000F instead...

But I've ran into another problem with these coolers taking up three ports:

Basically, right now I have no space. It can work if I move the 480 to the second pcie x16 slot, but I think on my p5b deluxe motherboard, the second x16 speed is halved or something. Not to mention worse airflow.

I see my options as replacing either the sound card or the FW800 card to a pcie x1 card... Which I am not planning of going that far. Unless someone can recommend me a above average pcie x1 sound card.

I take it no 2-slot 480 coolers exist?

I'm using a spitfire and if you got room in your case it goes out of the card and can be oriented down or up over.

Ouch. Two pcie cards!
That is a very good illustration of the motherboard and space taken by each.
You can't use a three-slot cooler then.
As far as aftermarket air cooling goes, I don't think there is anything decent that is slim enough.

However, there is the option of fitting a 120mm fan under your 480, against the exposed part of the heatsink that shows through the shroud.
I did something similar to mine before I had the Zalman, and had a surprising temperature reduction, somewhere around 15C at load. That exposed plate gets very hot, and putting a fan under it does help to dissipate some heat.
I also changed the thermal compound and installed the EVGA high-flow bracket.
I had the EVGA backplate on there too before the Zalman forced me to remove it.

So there is room there for a 120mm fan right under the heatsink, but you would have to attach it to the card with zip-ties or else make a bracket that would hold it against the card.
I tried the Prolimatech MK-13 cooler long before the other coolers were out yet. It didn't work very well with the 480, but I kept the custom fan bracket that came with it to mount two 120mm fans under the 480. I am still using it now with the same fans under the Zalman heatsink. It's shown on page 3 and 4 of this review:
http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=2
I have found that Prolimatech fan bracket to be very useful, and it only cost me about 85 bucks

I'm sure zip-ties would work

Edit:
cleric just posted above about the Spitfire cooler.
Have a look at that one as well, it should fit between your cards due to its' radiator orientation.
I hear it's a beast of a cooler!

PCI-E Sound blaster X-Fi Platinum....

i have one... they are great...

and heat doesn't seem to bother it....

concidering in my system it is about 2x480s with AXP coolers with modded EVGA backplates

I find that they run about 25 Deg C over room temps...

with my 24/7 OC of 800/1600/2200....

have fun....

Well, I've made up my mind. I'm going to replace the sound card with a x1 card and get the AXP.

Can anyone recommend me some mid-high sound cards for pcie? I was looking at the xonar, but I hear the x-fi titanium is good too.

hodgoes, any idea what the cheapest place to get the AXP is?
i found that the cheapest place for me was from AC directly....

i have the Creative X-Fi Titanium -FATIL1TY myself....

it is a great card.... so clear.....

i would recommend one to anyone
