Athlon II X4 600E Upgrade

Thread Starter

Hello. I was given a new computer for Christmas but it only has a single core Sempron. It also has a weak 220W power supply, which is why I knew if I wanted to do the CPU upgrade, it would need to be an energy efficient CPU. Upgrading the power supply is out of the question, it's proprietary. Here's the CPU I want to buy:

Also, the Athlon II draws 45W, as does the Sempron 140.

But on the HP website, it\\'s not listed as a compatible CPU. I know the socket on the motherboard is AM2+ and it\\'s an AM3 CPU, so it should work. (The Sempron it came with is AM3.) Can I upgrade my CPU? Here\\'s the motherboard info:

I also know to build my own next time. That's what I wanted to do from the beginning, but they went out and bought it without telling me.

It will work. If it can support a Phenom II, then it can definitely support an Athlon II.

Why is upgrading the power supply out of the question? When I rebuilt my parents' prebuilt HP computer, I just took out the power supply and stuck in an old Corsair 400W. Works perfectly. I can't find what the size of the PSU is, but if you take a look at the physical unit, you might be able to find out if it just fits regular ATX-sized PSUs.

It doesn't use a standard micro atx power supply. It uses a proprietary one.

Should work, since it supports Phenom II
I saw there that it can run CPUs up to 95W

Yes, but with such a weak power supply I wouldn't want to do that, plus I've already put in a graphics card.

Oh, in this case use that 45w CPU, didn't notice that you upgraded your graphic card

If I were you I would get the CPU I wanted and just get a dedicated GPU PSU.
