Dish Network Remote with HTPC

Thread Starter
I'm starting to piece together my HTPC/all-around-box and am going be using XBMC on it. I want to keep everything down to 1 remote so I wanted to use my Dish Network remote with it but don't know anything about IR recievers and the FAQ is kind of vague. I have THIS Dish 20.0 IR remote and it's a learning(supposedly) remote.

Can I just get a cheapo remote that comes with an IR receiver, have the Dish remote learn it, keep the IR receiver, and then just put away the cheapo remote? Is there more to it? Are there generic USB IR receivers you can get?

I know I'm not the only one with a Dish setup If anybody else has a Dish learning remote, I got an MCE remote and learned all of the commands on my Dish remote and it works perfectly. Except the IR receiver doesn't work after resuming from sleep or hibernate.

Tried different USB ports but it ended up being W7 turning off the USB devices during sleep. Unchecked that in the power saving options and it's all good now. <---me

I just got that Dish remote. I have not programmed my FTA receiver remote to it but I will do just that. It's supposed to learn codes from other remotes. The crappy thing is that you are supposed to program all the buttons at once unless the remote is able to learn most buttons if it finds a code for it.

I also have a Logitech Harmony 300 remote which is amazing since it will also learn codes from other remotes plus you can load pretty much any remote into in with the software. The database is huge.

Yea I've always wanted a Harmony and was going to get one if the Dish one didn't learn the commands but it worked perfectly.

Well I got the remote but it won't learn the codes from my FTA Satellite receiver remote. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Mmmmm. I press and hold the device key. In my case the DVD key on the Dish remote untill all the devices keys are lid up. Then Press and hold record for about 3-5 seconds, the device key stays lid. Now I press the key on the Dish remote that I want to program, then aim the STB remote at the Dish remote on the side where it has the receiver and press the key I want the Dish remote to learn, but nothing happens. I also made sure the Dish remote is in IR mode.

Pretty sad. Is that how you programmed your remote?

I have the Dish 21.0 IR remote

How close are you getting to the Dish remote when pressing the keys on the original remote?

Yea that's how I did it. It says to put it on a flat surface but I just held it right up to it about 1 inch apart. I don't know if it makes a difference but make sure you hold down the button that you're learning on the FTA remote for a few seconds or until the light on the Dish remote flashes.

Hmmm, is the FTA remote an IR remote? I was able to learn some commands off of my TV remote, too. It should learn any IR commands unless there are different types of IR?

I got it working. I replaced the bateries of the remotes just in case. Then moved the switch to UFH and then back to IR. I tried again with the remotes on a table and got both my TV and FTA receiver remotes programmed
