Hmm, I chose that PSU and Case just cuz it fit what I needed and had a lot of good reviews/feedback on it. Rebates work for me, but I'm just not sure when I'll end up buying it and the rebate might be over by then. I chose the 850W just cuz if I end up doing Crossfire I don't want to have to buy a new PSU. Would having too strong of a PSU cause damage if I don't need that much power?
Concerning the memory - xd_1771 is probably one of the most knowledgeable AMD people on the forums that I've encountered. I can concur with the choice of the G.Skill because I love their ram and it's what I've used in both my PC, as well as my wifes and two other friends/clients computers I've built.

Concerning the power - having too strong a power supply won't hurt anything as your computer won't draw more power than it needs. Personally I think having a little too much power available is better as you've room to expand later.

Well, after more research I decided to switch up a few things...

Asus Crosshair IV
I decided to go with that just cuz upgrading Mobos seems like the biggest hassle to me, so I might as well go with something strong.

Gigabyte HD6850
Seems like a better bang for the buck especially if you overclock it. And even when CF'd.

G.Skill Ripjaws 8GBs 1600
Someone said it was better and I save 5 bucks, reason enough right?

Having changed up a few things, I think I can handle going with a slightly less powerful PSU since the 6850s take less power than the 6870s do. Maybe somewhere around 750w? Also, would that Mobo be overkill or would it be just fine.

Thanks.

Memory performance on AMD starts to scale really poorly below 1600Mhz.
Many benchmarks state that 1600 CL9 is the same as or slightly outperform 1333 CL7; this is a 266Mhz gap
Now take the same timings and apply them to higher speeds; 1600 CL7 can equal or slightly outperform 2000 CL9 (which is why I usually recommend 1600 CL6-7 over 2000 C9 and often state 2000 CL9 is not really worth it); this is a 400Mhz gap.

Aside from that, most 1600Mhz memory just simply tends to overclock better than 1333Mhz memory regardless of latencies. Compare the reviews on the original 2x2GB 1333 CL7 Ripjaws vs the 2x2GB 1600 CL9 Ripjaws... they both overclock well but the 1600 CL9 Ripjaws have been shown to be able to do better.

I have the crosshair 4 extreme, AMD 1090t @4.2GHz w/ 8Gb g.skill flare @ 2000 MHz and 2 ATI 4870x2's and it's impressive. It doesn't get the big benching #'s the intel does but in the real world it is an ass kicker! I ripped a blu-ray for my iPhone today for the first time and was surprised that it didn't take as long as I expected.

hi , i would like to suggest a slightly better build for ur purposes (gaming \\ adobe CS5 ) and budget under 1k:
Mobo+8GB Ram 1600 209.98$ after MIR
CPU+Cooler 237.98$ (4.5 Ghz in 5 minutes on stock voltage)
Case+PSU1 189.98$ after MIR
Case+PSU2 229.98$ after MIR (realy quality case)
that 850w PSU is top notch and can handle up to GTX 570 SLI in future
anyway heres where things get interesting , for gaming and photoshop you want a good nvidia card , dont drool
Galaxy 570 319.99$ after MIR!
MSI 570 339.99$ after MIR
EVGA 570 349.99$ (free shipping)

total : 958$ after mail in rebates (with psu+case1 and galaxy 570)

heres couple good cases as alternatives :
Case1 99.99$
Case2 99.99$

PS: if u wanna save up 200 bucks and still wanna game on decent FPS and run ur CS5 on lighting speed get this GTX 460 and add another one in sli when u feel the need .

If I was buying right now from scratch (and if we had US prices! LOL) this is what i'd buy. I was reading this thread wondering when the SB post would come! Ha ha

Concerning mobos, you don't need the most expensive mobo to get mild and even great overclocks on a 1090T, 1055T - yes, buy the best you can afford. Any half decent mobo, doesn't even have to be the latest chipset will do fine.

Just a slight side note though, the 2500k is excellent for gaming, but the op said gaming was his lowest concern, the 1090T beats it in cinebench 11.5, so for the apps he's talking about if he was going to consider SB he'd be better off with a 2600K. That said, multi threading? ...wait for Bulldozer.

After reading all your responses and doing more research I'm pretty convinced that I should go with the 2600k. Just not sure if I should do a Gtx 460 or 6850 though. But cards seem pretty equal in terms of performance and price is roughly the same.

My main problem right now is finding the right Mobo, would the ASUS board that was recommended be good? Any difference in Micro compared to standard ATX in terms of performance?

EDIT: I'm gonna leave this thread here and make a new one in the Intel Forum. Seems appropriate since I've strayed from AMD. Thanks for the help and feel free to drop by the other thread. Thanks.

IMHO, no reason to go SB/Intel unless you like wasting money. For me anyway, the performance increase that would be realized by going this way would NEVER translate into real-world performance. Like the difference between a Corvette and a Ferrari. Both offer great performance, one costs a lot less, the other, while it can go faster at top speed, I would never realize that top speed because I drive the thing on the street.
