980x question

Hey guys I've got my 980x currently at blck 133 x 33 and my temps are good, mid 30's at idle etc. i've got my vcore at 1.3 and qpi/vtt at 1.3 as well (this is a dirty overclock mind you). it's game stable and i did a bench of metro 2033 for 99 runs and it was fine. i used vantage as well, fine.

I went ahead and upped my multi to 33 to get around a 4.4 ghz clock and set my vcore a bit higher (around 1.32 ish) and booted up into windows and figured i'd try bc2 and see if anything exploded. bc2 caused a bsod and i was going to copy down the code for some googling but i noticed it was nvlddmkm.sys? what went wrong here? i've got my pcie at 101 and all my other stuff is auto. my ram is set using xmp but it's running at correct voltage and speeds.

Short winded version is: what can i try to get a 4.4 ghz overclock? my 980x is a B batch.

Vcore - QPI/VTT - CPU PLL Ich/Ioh should not be on auto.

Okay for standard things ICH and IOH at 1.1v

CPU PLL try 1.4v(this is an undervolt)

Qpi 1.3v.

Vcore If your not stable at 1.3 you can keep increasing it up to 1.4v.

Use IBT Maximum for 3 runs on 12 threads and if this is past run Prime95 blend for 24hrs.

Mine never made it to 4.4 without exceeding 1.4 vcore, but would do 4.0 and 4.1 at 1.34 vcore without any trouble. A lot of people find they hit a sharp cliff they can't get over at a certain point, mine was 4.35.

I second using ITB as a quick way to assess stability. I would do 20 passes; this usually equates to about an hour of maximum load your system can take.

Though it doesn't seem to be a problem yet, you might want to consider your memory. Even if it is running at spec, you might want to slow it down one multiplier just to remove it from the equation until you get the clocks where you want.

Thanks. I have my qpi/vtt at 1.3. i have my pll at 1.4 and it seems fine! i changed ich/ioh to 1.1 as you suggested but auto seemed to put them there. im gonna just leave it as is i guess. my vcore is at 1.275 now and it seems stable. im just gonna test it for a few days and see if it's game stable and go from there.

Do you guys know any good 3x4GB ram kit and if so would it affect my OC at all? i'm thinking of just getting the corsair one that's the same as my 6GB kit. I don't want to be told how i have no need for 12GB either please.

With the B revision you should be fine, I got lucky and was able to get stability @4600Mhz with 1.26v, but I also don't use HT so this may have something to do with it(although I have past 3 IBT Max tests with HT on I have not done prime testing with HT).

tconroy do you think if i got this memory it would cause any issues? as far as leaving my stuff the same as it is right now but just throwing this kit in? it seems identical to my others except it's 3x4 instead of 3x2. Thanks for the replies bro! i've read posts by you and i think you know your stuff about the 980x. CMP12GX3M3A1600C9

IF you use 2 sets of triple channel memory, "6" sticks then yes your overclock will not be as easy.

Edit: However if you are doing video editiing or something memory intesnsive by all means use 3x4gb sticks for 12gb.

so since the amount of dimms is unchanged, 12 GB w/ 3x4 is fine right?
