Well DDR2 is almost dead. When DDR2 Dies and DDR4 is being announced DDR3 is going to be dirt cheap.

Any thoughts?
Yeah, upgrade all your boxes to 8 gigs if you can.

I just want to be sure DDR3 is universal and its not very selective for each motherboard.
DDR3 is a standard and *mostly* universal. Most DDR3 is tweaked to run fastest on Intel because Intel sells more PC's. But DDR3 will also run well on AMD hardware as well and AMD isn't about to shoot itself in the foot by releasing a new CPU architecture that won't run on the current memory standard. Rest assured that any *quality* DDR3 RAM that you buy today will work with "Zambezi". Forget DDR4 because that's all pie in the sky until 2015 or later.

Don't be sad for obsolete technology my friend. I have no more desire to go back to my 486 SX25 than I want a root canal.

Bulldozer will have much higher memory standards. We have heard that the memory controller will be (OFFICIALLY) rated to 1866Mhz - this is above 1333Mhz on most current IMCs. Whether it will still respond better to lower timings or more to speed we don't know, but the integrated memory controller will most certainly be improved and drastically different.

AM2 is socket 938, not socket 939. Don't confuse people here, in addition there is another socket 939 (simply named "socket 939") supporting CPUs with a DDR memory IMC.

Well you know DDR2 Aint all bad

I mean there are some sticks of DDR2 that can out perform any thing we have.

And i was sighing because i thought i was being clear not because DDR2 is getting old.

I don't know about you but DDR2 prices have been actually decreasing for me
Maybe it's just the lucky deals I get; last summer I got Corsair 2x2 DDR2-1066 5-5-5 Dominators for $30, and just a few days ago I got some OCZ Gold DDR2-1066 5-6-6-18 for $40 (they can do 5-5-5-15 at stock 2.1V voltage).

DDR2 isn't that bad at all, I consider it far from a dead memory platform even with DDR4 on the horizon. Some of the best affordable performance memory (i.e. higher speeds + lower timings) came out on DDR2. I think DDR2 was a rather big step (not that SDRAM > DDR wasn't a big step, that was quite so too). In fact, most DDR2 generic timings are still better than the generic timings given out with DDR3 (i.e. 1066Mhz 6-6-6 as the generic standard on DDR2, vs. 1066 8-8-8 and later 7-7-7 on DDR3)

It's best to wait until am3+ and bulldozer comes out to buy memory cause the max speeds will likely not be the same as current, 1866 is pretty fast memory and if am3+ supports it without oc then get that when you buy the setup.

Not absolutely true... supply really has be determining DRAM prices the last few years.

How so? The fastest DDR3 have lower latencies and higher clocks than DDR2.
Once again...
