Pentium Pro(not a joke) - Page 6

Thread Starter
I checked the bios and as many of you have told me there was zilch for any cpu settings.
So I check the mobo and the cpu boards and there are no switchs pins or any adjustment of any kind on it. So i guess im sol. i really need suggestions for a good version of linux for 256mb ram. going to try an old 65gig i have. any reasons it wont read scsi drives when it says scsi bios not installed?

Going backwards - Scsi bios means that the scsi card does not have it's own bios installed in the socket on the adapter card. Drives will still be accessible given drivers and some will boot depending on the mobo BIOS supporting SCSI boot which most do from that era, especially server boards.

As for Linux for 256MB ram there are several pre-builts (any properly configured will run) and I always recommend Puppy and Slax or Slax-Remix as they will run on less than you have. Below is a screenie of Slax-Remix v7 running on an ancient Sony laptop with a PII-433MHz w/ 256MB ram.

NOTE: The actual screenie was taken while running from the LiveCD (no hdd install) but subsequently I installed to the hdd with the built-in "liloinst.sh" utility. BTW with 256MB of ram and even crippled by a lousy NeoMagix GPU it will still run many YouTube videos, albeit at lower resolutions.

Puppy isn't as pretty but is equally fast if not moreso.

There might be a BSEL or pin mod for the old Pentium 1's. Boards back in that day did use jumpers to set the FSB speed. Your only other hope should your aforementioned options not pan out is to find someone who can modify the BIOS to allow for adjusting the FSB. My guess is with that many CPU's, banks of memory, and the overall lack of technology in that board, it would be unlikely to squeeze much more out of them anyway. Maybe 40-60Mhz more. That's still a 20-30% increase, but overall doesn't really get you anywhere.

But you do get an A+ for trying in my book. This is overclock.net, where we crank EVERYTHING up. Nowhere does it say its just limited to AMD X6's and i7's
