Gateway P-7805u Problem

Hey OCN-ers. I've got a little problem with Lappy and was wondering if you guys and gals could help.

I've had this laptop for almost two years now, and within the past two months I've had two major OS errors/events/results of futzing around. I'm a bit hard on Windows 7 at times, but nothing barbaric, i.e. small registry changes and such, but nothing to the OS registry entries themselves.

The first OS crash was remedied by a complete HD wipe and reinstall of Windows. That was about two months ago. This one, however, is completely baffling.

I don't know if this was a symptom of the problem, but this morning I could not access the internet through the wireless network I normally do. My iPod did so fine, but my laptop decided not to; however, when I connected to the other network available (I'm at a college with a 'public' and a 'private' network), it connected perfectly fine.

After trying some simple solutions I thought would remedy this annoyance (restarting the computer, updating drivers, etc.), I tried a system restore. This is where things took a major turn for the worse.

The restore went through and I thought all was well. Until I logged in. After entering my password, it went to what was supposed to be the desktop, but all I got was a black screen with my cursor. I opened task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del still worked fine), and both explorer and dwm were running fine. I was getting nothing.

I hard reset and tried again. This time, the login screen wouldn't even show up. I ran a system restore through a Windows 7 install disc. The login screen came back, but the desktop still wouldn't show up. I tried safe mode. It bluescreened.

At this point, I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue. I don't want to delete anything off the hard drives I have in there now (the only hardware change I made to the thing was the addition of a 160 GB Toshiba drive in the second bay), and both memtest and hard drive tests came back clean.

I've almost given up. Let me know if my computer is dead in the water or if there's still hope. I'm out of warranty, by the way.

UPDATE: Kaspersky Rescue Disc 10 (off Hiren's boot CD) has said that the filesystem cannot be loaded without corruption. Not sure if that helps with anything, but information is information, and if I were solving something I'd rather have more than less.

wow you are very unlucky my friend, i had a friend with the same problems, literally blue screens like he was at a club, on that note go into bios and run hdd tests and see if any errors come back, or you can do what i suggested to him: transfer all necessary files to an old pc or something, since its a laptob i suggested he use a really big flash drive or an external either way works, then completely wipe hard drive, (i know you already did try it agian) by that i mean there is nothing on the drive left; and start fresh first installing win7 and then installing computer drivers, and then installing software drivers like flash, if that doesnt work then i think you might have a bad hdd and might need a new one. but there is my suggestion

Yeah, I'm hoping that a wipe-n-install will do the trick, but right now I don't have access to an external drive with enough space to hold all the data I'd like to save. So until then, I'm running Ubuntu off a flash drive (which is working quite nicely, to be honest).

I can access both of my hard drives through Ubuntu as well, so I'm not sure if it's a hard drive problem. Also, HD tests didn't show any bad sectors or errors, so I'm not thinking it's that.

Hopefully soon I'll have a 2TB external and I'll be able to dump my data on to it then wipe and reinstall.

Thanks for the tips . Good to know I'm not the only one with these issues.

HDD would be my first guess but both drives are clean of errors and bad sectors. Im going to say its either a shot OS or the Mainboard is going/gone. Especially because it has happened twice in as many months.
Seeing as I looked at it in person a few minutes ago and know how you use your computer (unfair advantage) im going to say its the Logic board.
