Thread Starter
Anybody got a Pentium 3/Celeron( socket 370) based rig.

I have almost completed building my low end download rig.

Hi guise.. quick question. What sorta temps do you get? I have the PD 925 at 3.0, and I get around 60C idle. Hard to truly tell, since the stupid thing doesn't even have a temp sensor, but that's what I read by sticking a temp probe under the heatsink.

I posted my temps some time ago, but I'm not going to dig them up, given it's a single core P4 3.4 Ghz, built on 130nm tech, which makes it a lot different from yours.

However, I'd say that your temps are too high. Do you have Speedstep turned on in the Bios ? Your CPU is built with 65nm tech, and is only a 95w TDP CPU.

It should idle much cooler than that, even with the stock heatsink.

How is your airflow ? Did you install the optional front intake fan in your case ? The specs on your case says both front and rear fans are optional, but I'm assuming the case already comes with the rear fan in most markets. That would leave you to buy the front fan separately. That would make a big difference.

Have you checked your thermal paste ? Have you replaced it recently ?

Do you have Speedstep turned on in the Bios ?
Nope
How is your airflow ?
It's there. Not the GREATEST... but it moves air.
Did you install the optional front intake fan in your case ?
Of course. There's an AP-15 in the front, stock fan in the back.
Have you checked your thermal paste ?
Of course. AS5
Have you replaced it recently ?
Replaced it about 2 months ago.

BIOS now reads 48C.. but I have no way of testing whether that's right or not.

Yep, your problem is having Speedstep off. With speedstep ON, you will idle in windows in the 30º's or low 40º's C. You should have it on. Unless you are going for some crazy overclock, there is no reason to have it off.

There's a PIII server at my workplace, but I haven't yet had the chance to fiddle with it. In regards to owning one - no, I have never owned any s370 rigs, only used a couple at my friends' places.

Why? Did you want to compare benches?

I still haven't put the P3 rig together, but will soon.

Like Hyoketsu asked, do you want to compare benches ?

I have just one problem, it'll have to be some Linux based benches, or benches that can run in Windows 98SE, as those are the only OS'es I can put in it right now.

Oh, also, if that P3 will be used for downloads, it would be good if you could tell us your connection speed.
You see, high speeds put quite a bit of stress on the CPU. For example, even with all unnecessary processes off (OS - WinXP), I could only get ~5-6mB/s max (via utorrent) when I was running my old netburst celeron (2.4GHz, 128KB L2, FSB400). The CPU usage would stay at ~90-95% and the DL speed would not go any higher, though my plan would have allowed me to reach up to 10mB/s. Once I popped in my (R.I.P.)2.6GHz P4 Northwood, the problem went away. Long story short - your P3 might not be able to handle your downloads at high speeds, though, I imagine, you should be able to get ~1-2mB/s, depending on the specs.

Pentium d's don't have speedstep. They idle full speed. And should idle about 50 degrees stock cooler.I have seen pentium 4's idle at about 55 degrees though.
