Nice thread!

I upgraded from a 486DX4 back in 2001 (!) to a Pentium 4 1.7Ghz Willamete Skt 478, 256k L2 Cache, still have the chip.

I also have more Pentium 4's:

- Pentium 4 Northwood 1.8 Ghz, 512k L2 Cache, 400 Mhz FSB with Stock Cooler-> in a working system with 768MB DDR 266, 40 GB Maxtor IDE 7200 RPM and Geforce 6200 AGP; Gigabyte Motherboard with SIS chipset

- Pentium 4 Northwood 2.6 Ghz, 512k L2 Cache, 400 Mhz FSB
- Pentium 4 NOrthwood 2.8 Ghz, 512k L2 Cache, 800 Mhz FSB with Hyperthreading

and finally:

- Pentium 4 Northwood 3.0 Ghz (30 caps), 512k L2 Cache, 800Mhz FSB with Hyperthreading, with Thermaltake copper cooler -> in a working system with 1GB DDR 400 Single Channel, 120GB Seagate Sata 7200RPM; Geforce 7600GS AGP, MSI motherboard with Intel 848p Chipset (848P Neo-V Model - it's basically the 865 chipset but only with a single channel memory controller)

Cheers!

My old/backup system is a SL7CH socket478 P4EE 3.4ghz. Absolutely love it.
Quite outdated and the mobo it's in, does not do it justice, or support much upgrading from where it is now (p4p800-mx, only has sataI and no pci-e...).

Ive got 2 P4's, neither being used at the moment though. One is a 478 (not sure of the model number) @ 2.8GHz and the other is my venerable (775) 630, 3.0GHz with HT.

The 478 is part of a old HP rig, which works fine, just have no use for it and the 630 comes from an old Scaleo P

Count me in! I'm still in the stone age, as I have nothing better than my 2,6ghz/800fsb/512kb northwood(sig rig). Been running on a 2,4ghz/400fsb/128kb celeron before that. Ugh, the horror.
Anyway, I'm planning on getting a 3,4ghz cpu soon, but I can't decide on the type. Of course, the gallatin (aka EE) is out, since it's expensive as hell, compared to the others. What remains are the northwood and the prescott. When pressy was freshly released and benched, it lost to the NW due to lack of software support. I wonder how it would look now... Sure, the 1MB cache looks tempting, but the longer pipeline, the gluttonous power draw and the heat aren't that appealing. Considering the fact that I'll try to go above 4ghz, I'm leaning towards the northwood. Thoughts?

Change the Stock heatsink to Scythe Katana 3 which will help it cool better.

Northwood is good but prescott is better but gulps down lots of power if OC'd

I still have a Pentium D 830. Doesn't do much these days but I still have it.

Also have access to a free Pentium D 805 that I'm thinking about picking up to do some suicide runs on. Anyone want to suggest me a good but cheap mobo for it ?

Ah, I have no problems with cooling whatsoever - 32C@idle, 52C@full load (prime95). Intel's stock cooling is pretty decent, especially after coupling it with a nearby fan, a bit of AS5 underneath and an open case. What's holding me back is the voltage - I can't adjust it. I'm wondering whether I'd be able to OC a prescott as much as a northwood...
Blah, if only gallatins weren't so awful at their price/performance ratio >.>
