Between the game's own graphics settings and CCC I was able to go all the way from exceptional graphics with crummy fps to the other extreme - crummy graphics but great fps/performance. Just keep playing with various settings until you find a balance you can live with. I also had to set my refresh rate to 70Hz to get a sharp picture, but that may be my cheapo monitor. Also I haven't reinstalled expansions yet, but supposedly the only one that makes a difference in performance/quality ratio is SoZ. Also make sure you patch fully to 1.231765.
Oh, and if you can, or haven't done so already, try to get your CPU speed up to 3.5 or even better 3.6GHz.
Aye, those steps are pretty obvious. I used to crank down the settings as well, but... Y'know... Consecutive fireballs? That blows all your tweaking away The spacebar-pause was a lifesaver.
Regarding the CPU overclock, you probably haven't read the posts several dozen pages back, so I'll repeat my current situation. My mobo is a crummy cheapo ASRock p4i48, which, for some reason, doesn't have a connection port for the 4-pin 12v power cable. I also suspect my CPU might be hitting the mobo's TDP limit - it's isn' t an OC board by any means. Anyway, the point is, my whole rig is currently hanging on a single 14A 12V rail; that's 168W at the very best. The second rail goes solely to the 4-pin cable, which can't be used on my current mobo. Basically, I can't OC due to the crappy mobo (which, on top of all that, pushes hellish voltages through my components, and no, there are no adjustment options).

Oh well.
I think I might betray you, folks, and go over to the dark side soon.
After getting this awesome GPU, the crappiness of unicore CPUs really hit home. There's a very nice Asus P5N-E SLI board up for cheap in my vicinity, so I might be getting that one. It's awesome that despite being a decent performer, it also has an AGP slot. I'm almost sold!

True, that is one way to go, but you'll still need a better PSU and it would be a shame to waste that very overclockable cpu you've got. There is another option (for the short term) if you can find one at a decent price, a P4P800, P4P800 Dlx or P4P800-e are very overclockable, hell you might even run across a P4C800 at bargain basement prices. That, and a PSU like a CoolMax CU600B would buy you some more time to save up for something really nice, maybe even an x58 rig that will last you several years. I have a CoolMax CU600B myself in my P4P800 rig with a couple of powerhogs - a 6800GT and a 3.2Prescott and the voltages are stable on all rails, 2x18A 12v and 1x15A 12v. The only drawback on this PSU is its leads aren't real long and if you get a case with bottom mounted PSU, you;ll need an exention for the ATX connector (which they will provide for free along with extra modular cables if you need them). I'm not trying to talk you into anything, just throwing out a different stop gap option that would let you skip right past the LGA775 and on to something better when you can afford to go all the way.

I have a Pentium D 915 stored away... I'd been using it until dixson was kind enough to give me the processor in my signature rig.

Thanks for the input, bosem. Yeah, I'm looking for p4p/c800 mobos, but I can only get them via ebay for twice the price I would pay, were they to be sold locally. I even put up an ad, asking for them in particlar, but no luck so far. It's true that I love my s478 rig, but idk... I want moar powah well, I haven't decided yet, so it's still up in the air.
I have some cash left over from my pay, so if any of you have a decent s478 mobo to sell, I'm all ears.

Arguably, the best AGP card money can buy Oh, right, I think the HIS card had slightly higher clocks, but meh. It'd end up being massively bottlenecked by the CPU anyway + I can always overclock this fella
I used to have the HIS 4670 AGP card and honestly, it's not the best. It has the most ram and is one of the best, but it is outpaced by the 3850 AGP in most of the benchmarks that I have thrown at it.

Here's a hwbot comparison of the two.

Interesting stuff, but I 've seen some benches/read numerous threads where it was stated/could be seen that both cards perform nearly equally, with one slightly beating the other in some scenarios and vice-versa in the others. Why I bought this specific card is as follows:
Newer generation
Flash acceleration
Lower power consumption
There were no 3850 AGPs up for sale in my area
This card cost me half my local tech shop's listed price, and it's barely even used!

Nice. I sold mine on ebay about a month and a half ago and it went for $86. I turned around and bought a 3850 to replace it and it works better for me. I've been running pcmark benchmarks on old pentium 3 boards for hwbot submissions for my hwbot team, and most of them don't know how to address 1gb of vram, and the 512 on the 3850 can be addressed by those old boards, and having that card on those chips really helps out with the pcmark scores.

I was just playing with these socket 478 kids:

1: P4 1.7/256/400.
2: P4 2.4/512/533.
3: P4 2.4/1M/533.

Actually was trying to make a certain Compaq branded PC faster. It didn't accept the 1M procy, accepted the No.2 but ran it still on 1795MHZ which was a 100MHz improvement to the original 1.7 (which ran on 1695) one. So threw the 1.7 one back in.
