Thanks for the suggestion, djleakyg, but I'll stick to my plan smile.gif
@Nemesis158: sorry, but my P5Q doesn't support that CPU. It's probably because of the FSB. Thanks for the offer anyway! smile.gif

well, i dont even think you need to buy used. what are you budgeting for your cpu and mobo. and i am not a fan of teh C2Q. had crap results with it. if it was a C2QE, no problem, those were great chips, the extra cache was super helpful. i have had bad luck all together latley with 775, lol i left it about 4 monthes ago. just save your money, and but something good, instead of always playing hardware catch up

Can you explain yourself better ? Just saying you had crap results means nothing.

- What CPU did you have ?

- What Motherboard did you have ?

- What RAM ?

- What were the results you complain about ?

Errr, thanks for the concern, guys, but we're veering offtopic here. Big time. Suffice to say, I'm not an American and the market for PC parts is totally different here. Getting used 775 stuff is my best bet, seriously.

Still waiting for those Celeron/Pentium offers smile.gif
Note: minimum FSB=800.

I had a Core 2 Quad 9950 York. I had an XFX 790i Ultra SLI. I had Corsair XMS DDR3. It always ran hot, and never performed as good as my backup rig which I still use to this day. In the Core 2 Quad's defense, i have heard i may have gotten a defective chips that would explain my problems. it had inconsistant overclocking performance as well

Your problem was not the CPU, it was the motherboard chipset; the 790i had problems with overclocking. Just do a google search. Here and here and here for an example of Nvidia admiting problems.

/offtopic.

As to your case Hyoketsu, I hope you win that giveaway wink.gif

Ok,
I've got some issues of my own (who doesn't?). Anyway I've had to drop back my OC from 3.6 to 3.5MHz due to stability probs. I've ruled out RAM as memtest86 will run all day @225 FSB, PAT on, timings of 2.5,3,3,6,4 (IOW the only setting I had to loosen was CAS2 to CAS2.5). For completeness sake, I'll mention I ran the full battery overnite, followed by running test #5 while at work ~9 hrs, finishing up with a few iterations of test #8. So I think memory is not an issue.

If I had a tiny skillet I could cook on NB HS, so I jerry-rigged an old 486 fan ontop using plastic wireties (I know thats cheesy, but I'm out of E6000). That made some difference, but not enough, so now I'm thinking its those redhot 60TO3H mosfets, especially that one at the intersection of the AGP card and one of the RAM slots (and maybe a few others that aren't quite as hot). I've definitely got the vdroop prob as Vcore drops from ~1.57 to ~1.47 betweem idle and load.

What I'm wondering is since I'm only going for a modest OC (3.2 to 3.6MHz) if that is likely attainable by cooling those FET's without doing the droop mod, which I don't want to do if I can help it, especially since I'm getting old; eyes aren't what they used to be, and I can't find my box of hookup wire, heatshrink wrap, wireties, etc. (did find my stash of other parts though, trimpots, 1% resistors, etc. out the wazoo. I used to build audio signal processing gear in the pre-digital/smt days). Oh, I should mention that the 3.3V line never goes over ~3.22V, closed circuit, measured at the ATX connector, which amazingly enough agrees with BIOS and PC Probe. This line fluctuates between 3.22 and 3.12V, idle or load doesn't seem to make a difference.

So, does anyone around here think hsinking those FET's would get me anywhere, or is that just a waste of time and money? Here's a url to a discussion on the FET's used on these 478 boards that might add more insight to what I'm talking about. (Sorry I don't know how to make it live.)

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-50665.html

Just in case there's any doubt, I am referring to the system in my profile shown below.

Thanks in advance for any opinions, personal experience, otherworldly channeling, or wild guesses,

bob

Wow, just noticed, the link IS live.
