I'm wondering whether I'd be able to OC a prescott as much as a northwood...
Blah, if only gallatins weren't so awful at their price/performance ratio >.>

Get a 3.4Ghz northwood. Along with the 3.4 Prescott, probably the easiest to find. Will probably overclock better than the Prescott. At least it won't put so much of a heavy load on the motherboard and PSU.

But it's always a question I ask myself too: is Prescott better now, after all these years ? Has software been taking advantage of the 1MB of cache in a way that overcomes the deep pipeline and makes it worthwhile over the Northwood? We know it already performed better with video encoding back then, but what about the rest ? Does Windows Vista and 7 take better advantage of it ? Do modern games ? And SSE3 ? Does it have much impact ?

If there could only be one mad reviewer who took these classic processors seriously and made a couple of reviews, like a classic car magazine, but applied to computers hehehe

I was thinking along those exact lines. The cache & SSE3 vs the pipeline & horrendous power consumption dilemma is what's holding me back, though unless someone points out other good points regarding the pressy, I think I'll go with the northwood.
Oh, right, completely forgot:
Main criteria - gaming & HD video playback (ignore the GPU bottleneck; assume it's a HD3650 AGPx8).

For HD Flash video you need at least a 3.2 Ghz P4, better to get the 3.4Ghz anyway.

If you want to get HD Flash accelerated you must upgrade to the HD4650 (or the HD4670, but that is too expensive and the CPU is a bottleneck), only the HD4xxx series onwards support Flash GPU acceleration.

As to normal HD, I suppose you can do with the HD3650, but better to have the 3.4Ghz there too.

The 3,4GHz part is pretty obvious smile.gif I'm not going lower than the maximum my outdated mobo can handle. It's the NW vs PT matter that's bugging me.
Oh well, I googled for some other opinions and the general consensus is that northwood is the better one by quite a bit.
Alrighto, got a little job scheduled for the weekend + some savings of my own... I guess I'll be visiting ebay next week smile.gif

When you get one then tell us what kind of games and performance you get with it biggrin.gif

Oh, by the way, did you find updated/recent opinions about the Northwood / Prescott dilemma ?

When I read about it back then, the Prescott was supposed to scale with speed, which meant that at 2.8 Ghz it performed slower than the Northwood; at 3Ghz, the Northwood still had a tiny advantage, at 3.2 the Prescott strated to win a little, and the trend confirmed at 3.4. Since Prescott was originally meant to scale even further, 3.4 was just the beginning.

I've got a P4 Northwood 3 Ghz with a 7600GS and 1GB of RAM that I've been thinking of adding the extra 1GB of RAM, to see how it performs nowadays (unfortunately my board works with a maximum of 2GB of RAM).

Pentium 4, Northwood based @ 3.0GHz in my old laptop. It really likes to run hot.
Hyoketsu, just bought a P4 3.4Ghz Northwood from eBay biggrin.gif $38 with free international shipping. As good as it gets. There are still a dozen left to be sold, so hurry!

On another note, I just took out the 2.8 and put the 3 Ghz Northwood back into the system.

Installed Windows XP, and, to my amazment, 720p Flash works! Sure, as long as it is loading/streaming the video the CPU utilization is above 90%, but once all the data has been transferred, it drops to a maximum CPU usage of 82%, and generally stays around 75%, but can go as low as in the 50%'s if the video is in 21:9 cinema mode.

This was done with the latest Flash 10.2. I haven't used this PC with Windows way before Flash 10.1 came out, so I don't know how it performed, but I can say I had Kubuntu installed with Flash 10.1 (from six months ago), and 720p in fullscreen was not fluid. Maybe in the last six months Kubuntu received some updates and flash 10.2 may make a difference on Linux, but I only tested it briefly as it was like 6 months ago and then installed Windows XP.

The overall performance is quite good! It boots fast, and in general internt usage it's also fast. Perfectly usable as a second computer. Gaming is another story though, but I still haven't tested that.

I still have the system in a heavy, 2001 style white case, with no USB or audio front panel.. I'm going to buy a cheap NOX ZEN and put the system in it. And a Scythe katana 3 biggrin.gif I've got a Thermaltake all cooper heatsink with manual fan sped control, but it is either quiet, but the CPU reaches 60.º on load (40.º idle) at 1850 rpm, or 46.º load (36.º idle) with 2500rpm's, but it's loud. This CPU fan can do 6000rpm too. It's a good vacuum cleaner imitation at that speed LOL (and the vibration! But it really doesn't cool any better at that speed, so I never really use it at that extreme speed).
