It ran warm, drew a lot of power, and was slower than the competing Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2, and it's even slower today. It was clocked high because it had to be to compensate for it's low IPC. That is, it may be at 4.3 GHz, but a 4.3GHz Pentium D is no 4.3GHz modern CPU, and the cache and FSB isn't why. Believe it or not, the Pentium 4 had a lower IPC than the Pentium III before it! (at least this was true for the early Pentium 4s, latter ones with higher FSB/cache might have overcome it) The architecture/design is why it's slower than modern CPUs, not instruction sets and whatnot. Plain and simply, the Pentium 4/D is just too poor and old to handle modern intensive stuff well even if you clock it to 8GHz.
I would not pair it with a modern Direct X 11 GPU that is respectably fast. It will bottleneck it beyond belief. It'd bottleneck a GeForce 8800 series GPU for that matter. The higher end Radeon X19xx or higher end GeForce 7 series is about the most I'd pair with it and not expect it to bottleneck to a high degree. I had a GeForce 6800 GS paired with my Pentium 4 2.8GHz w/Hyper-threading, and they felt roughly evenly matched (maybe the CPU being a slight bottleneck even).

I totally agree... which is why my old Pentium 4's (one from 2003 and the other from 2004 respectively) are on server duty.. My 3.0Ghz northwood runs my 30TB server with no issues, and my other one runs my webserver.

Everything you said is true but I think it depends on the coding of the game too. I've had a test setup that had a Ceder Mill P4 @ 4GHz with 8GB DDR2 1066 and a 512Mb 4870. Believe it or not, when playing Crysis 2, the 4870 bottlenecked. It was always at 99% usage and the CPU hovered around 80% I mean, Crysis 2 is a port game but still, i was impressed when the P4 could push the 4870 to its max. It was doing playable framerates @ 1440x900 too

Edit: Forgot to add to the thread that for about 2 months now, I have a P4 2.8/512/533 (No HT) running my Linux Router biggrin.gif Like a champ...no issues and it surprisingly doesn't use that much power. Idles at around 50W

That's very strange. I though Crysis 2 was supposed to show less performance on good dual core CPUs as it was, let alone a poor performing single core with Hyper-threading?

I tried a Pentium 4 641 @4.25GHz in Crysis Warhead (custom settings basically close to Very High level), and with 8GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 560 Ti (I basically swapped my Core 2 Duo E8600 out for it), and it was definitely bottlenecking really bad. I even dropped things to low and it didn't perform any better (granted, I didn't restart, which means Object detail was still on High, but unless that brings a 4.25GHz Pentium 4 to under 20FPS...). That's a more GPU bound game too. I think Crysis 2 is more CPU bound?

I think Crysis 1 is more hardware intensive in general. Maybe try Crysis 2? Maybe it was the 512MB of video RAM that was the bottleneck
