Just seen this thread after I already posted a thread asking a questions between the performance difference between my E1500 and a Pentium D 945.

Details are here:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1224930/confused-and-could-use-some-help-please

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And what do I need to do to get on the list? Just post a screen of CPUZ?

Thanks guys!

Sign me up, I've got a Northwood non-HT at 2.4 GHz, haven't started it in two months though. Wish I was one of the few with a socket 423 Williamette, thumb.gif

Hey guys, been a while since i posted here just a little update. I am currently running a kick ass budget gaming rig, Sandy Bridge and a pair of radeon 4800 in crossfirex. But my main reason for posting is becuase i am trying to get a P4EE again. My deal for the 3.4 P4EE fell through, my friend ended up frying his i7 975 X and had this as his only backup. But I am looking for any socket 478 P4EE chip. Also, I am in search of a Decent 478 board. I had a really nice Asus P4 board but it has only three DIMM slots and i would like 4 dimms, AGP 8x or PCIe, Perhaps even DDR2. but what ever is availible, i will most likely take. I am currently running a P4 Prescott 478 OC'd to 3.15 GHz on a crappy ASRock Board. Light on features but it has been very solid and reliable. If anybody has any tips on which motherboard i should go for or if anyone has a CPU for sale, let me know. thanks guys!!!

ive got 3 : cel d 320 2.4 256 l2 533 fsb, northwood p4 2.8 512 l2 800 fsb and prescott p4 2.8 1m l2 533 fsb
trying to o/c on abit ic7 mobo
managed 3.6 ghz for prescott p4 1.38v and 3.5 for northwood 1.7v , currently testing stability ,corsair vs512 x2 ddr400 @ 3 3 3 8 on stock cooler
i'm leaning towards the northwood being better chip as it has ht.. any thoughts as to which would o/c better?

i'm leaning towards the northwood being better chip as it has ht.. any thoughts as to which would o/c better?

The short answer: You will probably get the highest clock speed with the Prescott.

The long answer: Compared to the Northwood, the Prescott has double the L1 and L2 cache and SSE3; but it runs hotter and has a longer pipeline. If you use a good cooler, heat might not be an issue; but the longer pipeline means that clock-for-clock the Prescott is slower. That means that at the same clock speed the Northwood will get the same amount of work done faster than the Prescott. The Prescott's ability to clock higher might make up for that though. Once you find the highest stable clock for both chips you'll have to run your favorite games or whatever and see which chip does best. You should not pick a chip based only on benchmarks because that won't necessarily show you real world performance. Only when you run your everyday software tasks and games will you see if the extra cache, SSE3 and slightly better branch prediction of the Prescott actually gives it an advantage or not.

Oh, and hyper-threading can help performance or hurt it, really depends on the whether the software utilizes it. The times when hyper-threading is enabled but not being used it will just be overhead or wasted resources that keep the chip from putting all it's resources to the task.

thanks for advice gunit

i lapped the prescott 2.8 and swapped to a zalman 9500 cooler..temps dropped nicely
got a shade over 4ghz @ 1.5v 40-55 deg cel .. normal use ok but bsod on stress tests, so dropped to 3.8 ghz..very stable, happy with that result biggrin.gif

now i'll try lapping the other 2 cpu's and see how i go..be nice to get the celeron around 4.4 (2ghz o/c)...i know its a stretch especially on air.worriedsmiley.gif
all fun and games bulb.gif
