Sennheiser HD 555?

Thread Starter
alright so my friend tried some Bose headphones at apple and was amazed by the bass and how you can't hear people talking. he was also amazed at the price of them. so i was wondering with the HD 555 can you hear outside noise much? i mean my friend liked not being able to hear the outside noise at all almost. and also he listens to hip hop and rap with a little pop and techno. one last question do you need a sound card for it i mean is it absolutely necessary?

edit: i am also looking to buy the HD 555 or AD700 for gaming and music.

555's are open headphones. You can hear your surrounds.

If your mobo doesn't come with onboard sound card then yes you would need one. But most mobos do, so you should be good.
I have a pair of Sennheiser HD202's and you can barely hear outside when no music is playing. Excellent budget headphones

You can pretty much hear all of the outside noise with the hd 555s because they are open ear headphones. The Bose, might have been the noise canceling ones, so those are pretty quiet. The Hd 555s though, are a lot better than the Bose Qc 15s (I have both). The hd 555s have a stronger, more capable, and punchier base, while the qc 15s have more of a muddy, toned down base. As for the highs, they're both pretty good, except the 555s have a more clear sound, while the qc 15s, don't really seem to be able to hit the highs, so they turn out to me more of a mid. The mids, are pretty much the same, the 555s, do seem to be a tiny bit clearer. As far as price goes, the Hd 555s are about $100 while the QC15s are about $300. I mean, if you have a quiet room, the Hd 555s are the better choice by far. If you're going to be on an airplane, or traveling a lot, the qc15s are great. For a sound card, you really need one, I mean my onboard audio sounds fine, but if you really wanted to get the most out of them, maybe get one. With all that taken into account, I would go for the hd555s.

If you have any music playing you can't hear anything outside, the sound will leak out but not in. If you do get them, there is a very simple mod you can do to improve sound a bit as well. It entails removing a little piece of foam from the inside of the cup.

A sound card isn't absolutely necessary but it makes a major difference. Even if you don't want to spend tons on one you can get a Xonar DG for $30. ($20 with MIR) The DG has a built in headphone amp too. I have the 595's which are very similar to the 555's. I noticed a major difference once I got a Xonar DG when compared to my motherboards on-board audio. In fact, I'd say it's the best upgrade to my RIG this year; which includes a SSD, 595's, and a GTX 470. For $20 that's pretty impressive if you ask me.
