a friend wants to make a dirt cheap htpc and needs everything
not for gaming, onboard 4200/6000 is fine (he would like a good card later)
his tv has hdmi and vga inputs

what we have decided on so far

1GB DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600) CL9 Desktop Memory Module
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0307432
or this if the open box one is gone
2GB DDR3-1333MHz (PC-10600) CL9 Desktop Memory Module
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0307438

Spinpoint F3 500GB 7,200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive HD502HJ - OEM
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0340804

M4N68T-M V2 Socket AM3 630a mATX Motherboard
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0354006

Exotic Ruby Red Front Panel Mini Tower ATX Case w/480W Power Supply
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0334041

Sempron 140 Processor Boxed (i can trade him my garage cpu for it, Athlon X2 260)
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0317380

LightScribe 22x DVD±RW Burner with Dual/Double Layer Support OEM
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0293535

Subtotal $196.91
Tax $14.33

Grand Total $211.24

if he gets the $40 mc cpu/mobo discount it would be
Subtotal $156.91
Tax $11.42

Grand Total $168.33

in that price range I would strongly recommend getting a used system. He will be disappointed, 1/2gb ram, sempron 140........sorry, but that really is a waste of cash.

He will be able to find a used Core2Duo system with better specs for under 200 easily. Another alternative is a used i3 540. I've seen several of these for sale on our marketplace here, with people upgrading to SB.

Please don't take this as bashing your entire build.
Look around the marketplace here, and you're bound to find somehting better.

Absolutely don't buy everything at microcenter (esp. memory)
What I'd suggest you do is keep everything on the list, but:
-Swap CPU/motherboard for Athlon II x4 + 785G board (if it fits the budget - otherwise get Athlon II x2 250 + Biostar 760G mobo for $63 after discount)
-Buy your memory at Newegg, and always get 2x2GB because anything below that is not worth it for the price. Try: Patriot 1600 CL9 - $42 shipped, GeIL Value 1600 CL9 - $44 shipped, Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 (good overclocker! does CL7) - $50, $40 AR; use code DM15A0111US for another 15% off

i have an x2 260 in the garage pc, its idle 99% of the time while playing music
i wouldnt mind giving that to him for the semphron, hopefully it will unlock

ill talk to him about the ram, $37 for 4g of 1600 is cheap
$33 for the kingston is cheaper, but he doesnt like mir's
