GTX 275 - GTX 470 with intel i5

Thread Starter
Hi guys!

I am new here and I hope you can help me.

I have a GTX 275 Twin Frozr, an Intel i5, 4GB of RAM and a 24'' full HD monitor.

I would like to get better performances with fps games like Battlefield bad company 2, Crysis 2 and so forth.

For now I though to buy a new graphic card, a GTX 470 Twin Frozr, but because I am not an expert I would like to be sure to improve my PC changing the graphic card.

First of all, do you think the GTX 470 is much better than the 275?
It should be better to upgrade the processor instead of the graphic card?

Please, help me to understand.

Thank you in advance!

It's a good start, other interesting upgrades would be 8GB of RAM or an SSD

Yes it is. On other option could be the GTX 460 which when OCed is better than the 470 while consuming less.

No, for games never unless you would have a Pentium4. I've seen recently a review that showed that with a good graphics card all you need to achieve close to i7 performance is a triple core Athlon II; the Core i5 is that much capable to tackle games. The higher the resolution, the less the processor matters as it has the same AI to run, but the graphics card has more details to render.

thank you for your prompt reply!

I am not able to OC a graphic crad, so it is better if I buy the 470.

Another thing: is it possible to SLI the 470 with the 275?

Thank you again!

No you would have to sli the 470 with another 470, trust me over clocking any graphics card is so simple these days, I think it's almost recommended by manufacturers lol but it's upto you if you want too or not.

can not I OC the 470? did you suggest me the 460 only for the lower comsumption? on this point, I have to specify that I have a 650W alimentation. I think it is enough for the 470, but I am not sure.

Thank you for all your clarifications, you are amazing!

650W is plenty for any single graphics card. you can OC the 470 but an OCed 460 willl have incredible performance, lower power usage and lower cost.
With the money you save you could grab an SSD or another 4GB of RAM

I am sorry if I continue to ask...

I saw the technical details by MSI and I have noted in particular this differences that makes me confused:
1 - Memory interface: 256bits (GTX 460), 320bits (470) and 448bits (275)
is this parameter important???
2 - Clock speed: 780MHz (460), 607MHz (470) and 633MHz (275)
how could it be possible?? Does more frequency mean more performances???
3 - Memory is similar, but GDDR5 for 460 and 470, instead of GDDR3 for the 275.
4 - DX 11 for 400 series, DX 10 for 200 series.

So, I understand the advantage taken from the memory and DX, but I do not understand the first two points that, for a unskilled man like me, seem to be better for the old 275.

A last thing that give me some doubts is the price: about 200 euros for both 460 and 275. Why???

Thank you again and again

Click on user control panel and fill out the system specs. We have no idea what you are trying to run with so it's hard for anyone to recommend improvements without possibly risking overloading your current components.

1) yes it is important however the 400 series uses GDDR5 which makes up the difference
2)Higher frequencies give higher performance however the 470 is fastest because it has the most cores.(its kinda like how a 2.66 GHZ i7 beats a 3.33 GHz i3)
3)GDDR5 and less memory will outperform more GDDR3
4) DX11 is really nice but not many games utilize it as of yet

Old cards (GTX 275) retain higher prices as they are still powerful and are needed for SLI setups.
The GTX 460 will be quite a bit faster than the 275, and an OC'd 460 or a stock 470 will put it to shame

Ok guys, I have updated my profile, now you can see my system configuration. Please, help me to get the right solution in order to improve fps performances.

I would like to specify that I have never had particular problems, only with Battlefield BC2 and Crysis. However, I would like to have no lags in single player with maximum settings.

Thank you very much!
