I saw the technical details by MSI and I have noted in particular this differences that makes me confused:
1 - Memory interface: 256bits (GTX 460), 320bits (470) and 448bits (275)
is this parameter important???
2 - Clock speed: 780MHz (460), 607MHz (470) and 633MHz (275)
how could it be possible?? Does more frequency mean more performances???
3 - Memory is similar, but GDDR5 for 460 and 470, instead of GDDR3 for the 275.
4 - DX 11 for 400 series, DX 10 for 200 series.
So, I understand the advantage taken from the memory and DX, but I do not understand the first two points that, for a unskilled man like me, seem to be better for the old 275.
A last thing that give me some doubts is the price: about 200 euros for both 460 and 275. Why???
Thank you again and again
While it is nice to understand how all these specifications impact performance, honestly I recommend looking up benchmarks on the web for the cards you are considering instead of trying to interpret the importance of each specification. It is not simple to look at specs and reckon performance. Benchmarks on product review websites, conversely, are pretty easy to understand.
Honestly neither the 460 or 470 is a large upgrade from a GTX275 unless you overclock them ... both have the ability to gain a lot of performance from an OC (over 20% at least), whereas the 275 starts out pretty close to it's maximum clocks.
I should mention that the 460 you are looking at though is already pre-overclocked because reference core clock is 675. It will probably perform very close to how a GTX470 performs at 'stock' clocks. But then, the 470 can be overclocked. Usually by a LOT.
One other thing ... make sure you have 'turbo' mode turned on for your CPU (not memory turbo, CPU turbo) in the BIOS. It's an automatic overclocking feature that may help your performance in BFBC2. In this particular game your CPU speed could actually affect performance a little bit. And it's simple and free, so why not?Edited by brettjv - 1/25/11 at 9:32am
