2GB 5870 @ $250 - good upgrade for the next year?

Thread Starter
Really wanting to get into the eyefinity/dx11 world of gaming. Been holding off on a solid price drop of the dx11 performers. . . and now currently with the 2GB 5870 being 249.99 at newegg after rebate (279.99 - 30 rebate) would it be a perfect time to upgrade and be happy for awhile (at least a year or so) or will the release of the 6990 line decrease the 5870's even more and will a game be released in the next year that would eat the 5870 alive?

And ultimately if overclocked will the 2GB 5870 be that big (if any) of a performance drop from my current 4870X2? I know right now I can max everything still yet with no issues, but with the upcoming releases this year of games like Duke Nukem Forever, Deus Ex, Guild Wars 2, and Homefront. . I want to be able to max all of them as well.

Thanks for any and all advice. Really have an impulsive itchy trigger finger since it's tax season, LoL.

This. Plus it may unlock to a 6970.

Best thing to do is do some comparison searching, (Google 4870 vs 5870) I'm sure their is plenty of sources. I'm more than sure the 5870 performs on par with the 4870x2 maybe just beating it on certain games. However you would be getting a decent dx11 and tessellation handling card, which is cooler and requires less power at a good price.

The 2gb version your talking about will perform excellent at 1920x1080 res, so if that's the res you play at you shouldn't be disappointed.

Personally I wouldn't buy the 5870 over the 4870x2 as the performance boost is not really that noticeable but the 4870x2 will perform worse in future games (if at all).

Age is also another factor, my 4870x2 died of old age not that long ago (even with an Arctic Accelero cooling it) so I was forced to make the jump, you don't know how much life is left in yours it might be worth upgrading to something and getting some money back by selling the 4870x2 while it still works.

A 2gb 5870 is not worth it over a 1gb unless you are running an Eyefinity setup. And even then a 6950 will outperform. ( http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...-review-9.html )

At that price point you would be better off with a 6950.

Still, why not wait until those games come out and then upgrade if your performance isn't satisfactory? I held off on jumping from my single 5850 and I'm very pleasantly surprised how well my Eyefinity setup is running. Will now be waiting for the next generation after 69xx. I understand itchy tax season though. That was my monitor excuse.
