There is no confirmation that the die is laser cut, however we are almost completely certain just slapping the 560 bios unchanged onto the 460 will not work. The only slim hope remains is to mod the 460 bios directly, which will be feeling blindly around in the dark without the 560 bios as reference. Even with that, there isn't much clues or documentation showing that what the changes between the two bios really reflect. I doubt many people have time to mess with that.

Got a response from EVGA. They said they don't have the technical documentation to specify whether it was laser cut or disabled otherwise.

Still waiting for Nvidia to respond.

I just took a look at the BIOS of the 460 and 560 at a low level. They look nothing alike! I'm now not surprised that just dropping the the 560 bios in does nothing. I'm sill pretty amazed that a 460 with a 560 can still run (with a few artifacts). The 560 bios is not the way to go obviously.

lmao at all this talk of laser cutting. really? is that what people think?

no one knows WHAT nvidia does to the chips to enable/disable features/functions/shaders/etc.
i just love when people act like they know.

where does nvidia say they laser cut them?
people say it, and i guess it makes sense.... but nvidia does not acknowledge this. i cant find anything anywhere that is a statement made by NVIDIA that it is in fact truth. even when they said the 7 series were laser cut, same thing. people were saying it, but nvidia didnt release a statement saying that is in fact what they do. just because people say it on the internet its true?

I don't think the partners really even binned which one's they converted, and that 470's and unlocking 465's are the same, w/no statistically-significant difference in any regard across the total population of both cards.
Most partner sold 465's and why didn't NVIDIA just lower price then?

Also, do you have enough of sample to make the claim on population of the cards?

It was the 6-series.

Laser cutting is nothing new or special but companies do not talk about because consumers don't understand or care. We also know both NVIDIA and ATI perform some physical modification as it obviously cannot be unlocked via software (people have been trying for years). Regardless of the method use, these cores can not be unlocked via BIOS update.

Here's what a laser cut looks like on a ATI X800:

for all we know they are all the same chip. probably not but just saying
Just because you don't know, don't assume no else here knows.

We absolutely know they are not the same chip. You can tell by the architecture. Even making that suggestion shows that you don't have any background in this...

GF100 vs GF104. Note that the GF104 has what appears to be 16 distinct blocks but it is actually 8 blocks. NVIDIA disables one of these. That makes it 7x48 = 336 cores.

Here is the GF100 up close:
