Things like this can and WILL stifle economic growth. Horribly so.

and yet Australia's economy did far better than America's in the recession

not advocating caps, since i've had restrictive ones for my entire life, just saying.

It's not actually as bad as it might seem, and as many people make it out to be.

I moved from the US to Australia about 4 years ago. When I moved out here, I thought it was "the end of the world" because in Australia, internet is ALL metered. I was paying $89 for 40GB/month for ADSL2+. It's not really a big deal.

Since then, they have loosened up a bit, and increased my cap to 60GB/month. I rarely hit my limit these days.

Ya Western Canada seams a lot different, I'm not sure what Bell aliant is but it seams to be some how different from the Bell in Ontario because Bell in Ontario has the worst packages for internet and the worst network. They cap everything, like 40gb cap for the best packages.
I know this isn't about cell internet, I was simply saying Bell is NOT an isp over here, the only thing they sell here are phones, which is why I was wondering how this would affect western Canada, as our internet companies are completely different than the ones back east.

When I upgraded to the 30mb/s service over the 15mb/s service I asked the woman on the phone if there 100gb/mo cap was real, she said no, it's not implemented and only there to discourage people from using tonnes of bandwidth.
I hit 250gb a couple months back with torrents alone and nothing happened.

QFT. When I told my American friends this, the reactions were always along the lines of: Fail Canada.

I'm with Shaw and the service is horrible. Modem is crap, I pay for 7.5 down and get 15-23 at 3 A.M. and 2-4 during the day. Really Shaw? I want to watch this 360p YouTube vid NOW! not wait up all night... No thanks.

And with 4 PC's in the household @ 60GB's a month there's only enough bandwidth to check the news, OCN and maybe make a few Skype calls, before it's back to games and Ebook's. Least the new rules don't apply til Feb 1'st, til then I'm hitting the torrents to grab what I can to get me through.

Only thing positive about this is that Shaw has no contracts, I phoned the Provincial ISP to check them out (they have caps but don't plan on implementing them in the immediate future). I may be joining the thousands of Ex-Shaw users who have already migrated. God know how many will switch when they receive bills totaling $100+.

This plan works perfectly for rich old white dudes who don't use the internet for anything but looking at pictures their grandson sent of his kids.

Oh wait, I didn't mean to describe the entirety of the CRTC. OOPS.

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/about/commissioners.htm

Seriously. Unless one of them has a serious porn habit they've never downloaded more than a GB of info between the 13 of them.
