It's not strange. There are so many hardware combinations, and the drivers may work with the games you play, and may not work with others.

In addition, there are people with a high tolerance for microstutter, or who can't see it, or who can stand banding, or who are just used to it. I came from the CrossFireX 4870 1GBs so I had a frame of reference coming over to the 460s, so I immediately saw the differences the first time I fired up my games. And of course it's hard not to notice driver crashes when your screen goes completely black when playing a game. ATI got a handle on microstutter, banding etc., but after 6 years, Nvidia is still trying.

Don't get my wrong, I really like my SLI 460s, they just don't deliver the same gaming experience as CrossFireX. I'm rooting for Nvidia to make some sweet drivers that conquer their MGPU problems.

I've had great experience with drivers on both sides of the isle. When I do have issues, though, the vast majority of them have been with ATI drivers, especially with crossfire.

I have had several SLI setups that ran fantastically (GTX285, GTX460, GTX470, and a few more), but every HD5000 series crossfire setup that I ran suffered from tearing or stuttering in many games (5750, 5770, 5850, 5870).

I have basically had the opposite experience, Coelacanth. I have found that in nearly every scenario, nVidia drivers are more mature and usable, especially when it comes to multi-GPU setups.

The one area where nVidia is lacking though is in multi-monitor support IMO.

I sold my 5850 and went back to my backup gpu. I loved the 5850 but I didnt like the drivers.

I am glad for the still competition from nvidia. We all win when theres good competition.

I was using 4870s, I didn't know that the 5 series had so many problems. I was watching youtube vids of SLI 4xx / 5xx and CrossFireX 5xxx cards, the the CrossFireX setup was so much smoother in gameplay (like I experienced with the 4870s). I guess I just got lucky with the ATI drivers; I had 0 problems from the 9.x drivers all the way to 10.10.

I guess at the end of the day, some people will always have problems with ATI and Nvidia drivers, and my personal experience has sort of soured me to Nvidia.

I trust what you're saying though, staryoshi, your video card assessments are some of the most legit around.

It's never been a problem with the hardware, just some rough CCC releases, methinks. I haven't tried drivers newer than 10.7 though, so my experience is less relevant than it used to be

I'd still love to test members of the 6000 series to see how the hardware/software has improved

Also, I added more to my post since you quoted it... I have a habit of editing often It's kind of like AMD's graphics driver release schedule Rush to get the post out there, then edit, edit edit!

Yea me too. I hear that CrossFireX scaling is super high now. I think my next setup might be a pair of 2GB AMD cards. I like going back and forth between the 2 camps to see what's up.
