3 dual channel kits vs 2 triple channel kits

From what i understand it shouldn't make any real issue but what do you guys feel about this? The only real advantage is that the 3 chips would come from the same batch but in real world that probably equates to nothing. Ram is so fast anyways that if 1 chip happened to be a little bit slower and slows down the whole triple channel you would never notice, i mean we are talking about nano seconds here.

A nanosecond is a big deal, and as memory speeds get faster the tolerance for errors gets lower, not higher. If one chip out of the 16 on a DIMM can't keep up with the rest the DIMM is going to be rated at that speed of that slower chip, or thrown out as defective.

That said, there is no implied difference between two tri-channel, three dual-channel, or even six individual DIMMs, if they are all the same type/speed/ICs.

Correct me If I am wrong, but no matter how you buy a Dimm, a Dimm is a Dimm and 2 or 3 of the same Dimm can be run in dual or tri channel no matter how they were packaged.

I'm actually running 3 DIMMs from 2 dual-channel kits right now just fine.

I am making an assumption here but.....
No DIMM is created equal, so buying in triple channel your at least getting the same batch of DIMMS where if you buy in dual channel one DIMM in your channel might be from a completely different batch.

I still stand by my statement though that memory is so fast these days running at your slowest DIMM who really cares.

Well you are only running at your slowest Dimm speed because all of the Ram in your system has to be set at the same speed and latency. So if the worst stick in your Kit can do 2000 7-7-7-21 and the rest can do 2133 7-7-7-21, then yes the fastest you can run all of them is the former speed and latency, but if you removed that Dimm and replaced it with another that could run 2133, then you could run everything at 2133.

You are correct.

A triple channel "kit" is just three sticks packaged together. Sometimes they are tested together, but not always.

I've owned about two dozen "kits" of memory, as well as dozens, if not hundreds of individual DIMMs. Not once have the DIMMs that were packaged together had more consistent OC properties than any two random sticks of the same type.

Some of my tri-channel kits have sticks that aren't from the same batch at all. I've even gotten different ICs among DIMMs packaged together, on occasion.

Even when they are of the same batch, it doesn't mean anything. One of my tri-channel kits that did have sequential serial numbers in the SPD of each DIMM was still highly inconsistent. The best stick OCs about 100MHz further than the worst.

And I disagree that speed doesn't matter. If viable, I prefer to bin my own RAM. When I first went to LGA-1366 I bought fourteen individual 1GiB sticks of Samsung DDR3-1333 CL9 (they were on sale for about 15 bucks each). The worst stick did 1400, the best did 2000. I used the best four at 1600 CL8, and sold the rest at at a five dollar markup. They sold out in about 20 minutes (this was early 2009).

The only reason I ever buy kits is because they tend to cost less than individual DIMMs.

Well I can tell you from experience buying a 2x1GB set first then another exact same set 8 months later.They performed no where near the same in overclocking,most likely completely different IC's.If you can get 3 dual channel kits from the same production time it should be fine.
