Thank you. I have updated it accordingly.

Edit: Yes, that's the ugly bastard!
lol it is not that bad! I would say what you have to spend don't worry about me making fun or down grading you or even saying crap about you having a old system as I was using a Pent D 920 about 1.5 years ago, I already looked up some options for you but need to know your budget as so I don't overwhelm you with unobtainable upgrades

Usually by running manufacturers diagnostic tools. Maybe this one:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downl...sid=30&lang=en

The Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tools are used primarily for determining the physical condition of your hard drive. If you are having computer problems which you suspect are hard drive related, you can test your drive with this tool. This diagnostic utility is designed for hard drives larger than 8.4 GB with the model number starting with WDxxx.

ouch ok well memory first then but the best suggestion after that is well --- ( are you good at saving money? some aren't. and are you employed or a student?) just so I know cause really you do need to get out of that board cpu combo the best cpu you can put in it is the lga775 E6750 which you can still get on amazon for 70~80usd used or 115 new but it still won't be up to date, so I ask again the questions above

Thanks! The initial scan said "Pass", but I suppose I'll do an extended scan later.

I'm ok at saving money, provided I have a goal, but I am unemployed and a student. Income varies with oddjobs, though I mostly sell my older stuff on Amazon or Glyde. I can get money quickly if the purchase is reasonable in price enough to be motivated. I do like to bargain hunt on ebay. Used is absolutely fine. I had my heart set on a Phenom II x2 550 because you could unlock cores and get it up to 3.6-4.0GHz (should I ever need a quad). You know -- something future proofy. But I'm open to suggestions and better deals of course. Just throwing my current goal out there.

No that's perfect to put out there what you want, I will do some real searching. I want to get something to eat and jut let my eyes rest from the screens, I will let you know later what I come up with do you think you could come up with about 400.00 or even on the lower end 300.00 with those amounts you could get at least a system useable for about 5 years (not at max settings or anything) but more than enough for a start with ability to grow a little? (answer a you wish on that I am going out but check this thread a lot)

Gah, I would not feel comfortable spending that much. My bad, I should have specified that this is mostly a PS3/360 replacement, and I sold my PS3 to get as far as I have (I'd have sold my 360, but it died). I am looking for very modest upgrades, to widen the bottleneck on the 460 a bit. I would like to play with about max settings on GPU intensive games and with more modest settings on the more CPU intesive games, all at resolutions that would look nice on a 720p/1080i crt hdtv. Maybe 'til about 2014, when all of the newer generations of tech come out.

I appreciate the help though. Have a nice one!

I hate to inform you but the new gens of tec are due out this year beginig with the new amd bulldozer chipset and ending with nvidias new kelper cores which on paper are supposed to be 500% better than the current firmi chips followed by the maxwell chips in 2013 which are supposed to be over 1000% better than the current firmi chips

That's fine. If those parts work as well as a PS4 in 2014, I'll upgrade then because the parts may be much cheaper. In the mean time, they'll still be making games for the current consoles, and that means games that my specs can deal with very well. At least that's the plan. I'll probably miss out on a few great exclusives maybe, but they'll still be worth playing in 3 years.

dude... if you want to play current console games at current console res and quality buy an old 8800 or something... get a clue... and enjoy dx9... because thts what consoles offer... i dont understand why your even posting here if your worried about competing with current consoles... i've seen onbord video cards recently that can compete with consoles like everyone else was saying get a better processor if you want to play better games... for less than 150 you could have a amd motherbord and a dicient dual core amd or something
