I keep the machine spotless, cleaning it and dusting it out at least every other month. I'm anal like that, plus it's on a stone floor with fresh A/C air from above - I just don't keep the temp below 77 ambient.

For me, changing/reapplying thermal compound made things worse. I would advise well against it if the card is working properly.

There are a couple of videos on YT about putting thermal compound.
1) cleaning old compound is very important - use isopropyl alcohol (didnt have any myself and used impure alcohol)
2) apply compound, tighten heatsink, remove and check the compound. Although less is more, it has to cover at least 85% of the chip
3) cleaning the fins of the heatsink from crud apparently made some difference for me. This means removing the card and using an air blower together with bamboo skewers to clean the crud. Don't break the fan!!!

Regarding sli temps
The second card always has lower temps as it is underused in sli. In order to test the max temps of your cards you have to put only one card in the pc, measure max temps and repeat with the other card to get accurate results. If you can't fix the problem card, always put it in #2 in your machine.

No wonder why the offending card would warm up. This is the old TIM that was applied in half the chip area.

After cleaning up, I applied Noctua TIM in small balls in many parts of the chip. Tightened the cooler and removed it again to check wackosmiley.gif

As you can see, TIM didn't go everywhere! Graphics chips aren't CPUs and need more TIM. It is always advisable to apply TIM, tighten, remove and recheck as I would have avoided the problem in the first place.

Added tim in the in-between spots and retightened the cooler. But it was still not enough, as temps were 6-8C lower than before but still high. The solution was to also clean the cooler fins as it was filled with crud and dirt and now the card is quite happy, about 10C lower than card #1 in SLI, as tested by furmark.

Hope someone may find this useful.
Wow that does not look like the stock cooler lol i have had 3 460s and all the coolers have looked like this:

Yeah, what you have there is a reference (or at least near reference) cooler design.

So that's what the reference coolers look like tongue.gif

Is there a space between the SLI'd cards or are they sandwiched with no space like mine?
Guy,s any cooler from a 8800gt on to a 560 at least,(probably newer too) will work on these cards I have a msi piped cooler on my 460 from a 8800 OC and it keeps it at 47 to 50 under heavy load...
