I've found using a ratcheting screwdriver (set to loosen) works perfectly. You don't use too much force and it automatically stops tightening (starts ratcheting) when under even light tension.

You don't have to pinch the rad tube flat like that video, solder can actually bridge a pretty good gap.

I would always try to solder first if possible, it's how the rad was built, so you're using the same permanent methods. JB weld will probably work fine as well, but not as good.
You must have run in to a snag with the JBWeld, possibly didn't get a good seal. As I said earlier, I have used it in drag racing on turbines, cracked oil pans, exhaust manifolds and various other areas. The stuff is serious business. If done right, it's totally permanent. If it can withstand the drastic temperature differences in exhaust manifolds and oil pans, it's totally fine on a water cooling radiator.
