How on earth does furmark kill GPUs? I'm tempted to uninstall it now.

i was using OCCT when i sent mine to the GPU graveyard.

Reason i went with the cyclones was because they were 150 each... i can really get by with just a single one, so ill run them for as long as they last and then go to something else... They were the same price as my 470 when I first bought it... and a single one gets just about the same performance.

I'd try that, but it's not even in alpha form yet, by the looks of it. I used to use ATItool but then realised I preferred OCCT.

Indeed

Great card, really impressed with it so far.

I got the memory up to 4400MHz stable but didn't try any higher. That was at 1.0v, 850MHz core and 1700MHz shader. Are there any reasons not to try any higher?

Because I can't monitor the temperature of the memory chips

Yeah for some reason I don't think they saw the need to finalize it. It's only a "preview" but it works wonderfully. It's pretty easy to set up and it gives you convenient little messages telling you there were artifacts with your overclock.

The highest temp ive seen when it happened was 70c..

Or could i blame the PSU?After this happened i tried booting and the psu fan :
Nope, typical MSI hardware.

It doesn't. I use it and have for years. Here are a few feedbacks from MSI and newegg.com You pick anything with the MSI name on it and look in the feedback. You will find and alarming high rate of **failure**. There is 20 pages of this. This is just one video card.
Look deeper into the MSI name. Look for yourself! Still dont believe me. Search this forum alone.
Then search the ati forum.

It does not matter if its a motherboard, or a video cards. They are bad.

This card has problems! Do not buy this card

Cons: Bought this card a few days ago with high hopes. Start it up, install drivers, and then go into Left 4 dead 2. I set the settings to high, go into the game, and only get 15 FPS. And it dips to less than 10 when there are a lot of zombies. I don't know if I just got a bad one or what, but I am EXTREMELY unsatisfied.

Other Thoughts: Regret, regret, regret.

Cons: the card came DOA. hangs on windows boot. really dissapointing..

Other Thoughts: heard mixed reviews about MSI.. think i made an opinion for myself

I'm suspecting the vrm's because the cyclones dont really have cooling on them.
I'm still very shocked that it just quit on me.Been playing since august with it and never had any problems until yesterday.
I even did runs with higher clocks but not on furmark...kombustor didnt kill it at those speeds.
So now i'll keep my hands off furmark (it was only the normal stability test, not the extreme one!!!)
Hope i get a better sample then this one then if MSI accepts it.

That sucks ...

I'm of the opinion that it's really not worth it to go overboard w/one's OC/OV activities. You may be able to see the difference between like 850 and 950 core clocks on benchmarks, but actually playing a game? The difference is going to be so miniscule to the naked eye (or entirely invisible) that it's really not worth the risk.

And using software like Kombustor, which is designed to heat up your card to a very un-natural degree ... has never struck me as a particularly good idea. You have to remember that you have very limited temperature monitoring capabilities on a graphics card, only a couple three sensors at best, yet there's a LOT of other components that can get too hot and you'll never see it happening.

ALso, there's the fact that 'Kombustor stable' doesn't really 'mean' anything in terms of stability, all it means is that your card can handle high temps ... that's really all you're testing ... I don't really see the point, because temps are not the only source of crashes/instability.

This is why I test my OC'ing stability w/actual games, and something like 3dMark or Heaven. I'll do relatively extreme OC/OV's for the occasional benchmark run, but I will not run them 24/7, and I will not run them on Kombustor.

Sucks to hear about your card. I think maybe your VRMs got burned out. I benchmarked my cyclone on OCCT at 875 @ 1.075v and my infrared thermometer indicated that my VRMs went up a scorching 119c at one point! And that was with Enzotech aftermarket heatsinks already installed on the normally bare VRMs.

Now those VRMs are typically rated at 120 celcius, so overclocking past that, you will be leaving regulation specs and venturing into the safety margin. I won't take much more to blow your mosfets. I think the big problem is the cyclone comes with the reference 3+1 power phases, while many of the premium versions of the 460 like the hawk or above come with 6+1 power phases. 3 power phases is definitely not enough to sustain the power needs of a high overclock.

I've also decided that from now on, I will only buy gpu's with extra power mosfets. Those are starting to be standard with some of the vendors. MSI's TF2 560 or gigabyte's OC 560 are their baseline models, but already come with 6+1 phases while the reference design by nvidia only calls for 4+1.
