My suggestion is just rewire the house.

over time you will realise how convient it is.

I did it took for ever and costed a couple hundred but it was so worth it. The house is neater the internet is faster
The internet shouldn't be any faster unless you went from CAT5 (not CAT5e) or older cabling to CAT6.

House will definitely be neater but it's an 'extreme' solution to the OPs question.

performance route you buy a SWITCH not a router! A router will create more noise and overhead on your network.

Not my house, I'm renting from a friend who has no need for anything other than wireless. I'm fortunate enough to have the room beside where the router is.

Then go buy this $20 switch, you plug Ethernet into it from your router, then plug your devices in then your done, no extra setup or configuration needed.

Heres another a link if you like options

Next question is, would a switch be more beneficial than enlarging the hole slightly and running a second wire from the xbox straight to the router?

I have a Netgear FS105 for sale, brand new in box. I'll give it to you for $30 shipped. I'll even give you a CAT5 cable along with it.

Nevermind. Just realized you're in Canada.
