Thermal Paste Question - Page 2

Those are good temps and that's an amazing cooler (use to have it on a AMD Athlon II X2). In theory it would have been better to clean the CPU first but you know don't worry bout it 48C really isn't that bad for a quad.

EDIT: oh I didn't see your idle was 48C...that's fairly hot. This is the reason I didnt use that freezer pro on my 4 core, I bought a better one. You might want to try and take it off and reapply some MX-2 on it to see better temperatures

As fr as your temperatures monitoring goes, I use speedfan and I by processor elimination figured out which temps were shown. I pulled out my IR thermometer and checked my MObos heatsinks, CPU, RAM, etc. This allowed me to find the closest one to the temperature shown, most times I would trust core temp and see I'd those match the core 0 and core 1 in speed fan. Hope this helps!

Ok, well here's a shot of my temperatures at idle and at load, how's that?

If your temps are okay forget about reapplying the thermal paste it obviously isn't causing your problems.

Alright, thanks to everyone who's replied. I know I'm being a bit of a paranoid bugger, apologies if I've been annoying

Anyway, update. I thought to err on the side of caution. Cleaned of the old gunk, applied new. Job done, temperatures sitting around 44 for the CPU now, so clearly whatever I did made an appreciable difference.

Final couple of questions then: Does the final temp sound "OK"? This is in a room about 23-24 C ambient, but that's really all the data I've got. I know I should be working from results (temperatures) dictating what I need to do, but I don't know how good these results are. If people think that they're OK, then to be honest, I'm not going to meddle with the thing anymore:"si non confectus non reficiat" from the Vetinari school of thought.

Second question: Is it possible to get the CPU fan to run at maximum speed all the time? What are the benefits/drawbacks? Currently, it's being controlled by PWM, and I'm using speedfan to manage the speeds. Q-fan has been disabled.
