SLI'ed GTX 280's for triple-screen gaming?

Thread Starter
Right now, I've got a GTX 280 which has been working great. I usually play stuff like Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, etc. No twitch shooters or anything like that. I also have 3 22" monitors for 5040x1050, and have tried using SoftTH for triple screen gaming with limited success. I really want to start using a legit solution to multi-screen gaming like Nvidia Surround or Eyefinity. So, should I buy another GTX 280 (Surround requires SLI), or sell the 280 and get an ATI card for Eyefinity? If ATI would be the better solution, what's the best bang for the buck Eyefinity card right now? I know this is the nvidia forum, but since I own the 280, i figured I'd post here. Thanks for any help

I'd probably be inclined to say sell the 280 and get a 6970 2GB card, honestly, if all you're interested in is regular 2d surround.

I was afraid of that... I really don't want to drop that kind of cash right now. I was hoping for something in the $200-ish used category if a new card would be best. I guess I should rephrase the question.

Will 5040x1050 be playable with SLI GTX 280's? Not looking for insane framerates with maxed graphics on brand new games, just something passable. If 280's won't cut it, what $200-ish used card would be best? I've read good things about the 5870

The answer to the bolded question above is a 'Yes', IMHO.

Take a look at this review of GTX275 SLI (close enough to your GTX280 SLI) , including the resolution 3x1680x1050 which is your interest. As this study was done back then, no modern games were possibly included. But for those games tested, the framerates were all ok, particularly you are not looking for maxing out everything with insane framerates.

I hope this helps you a bit to make a good decision.

(note: TH2G technology was used for the test (not Nvidia 2D Surround) but the difference with respect to your question is not relevant)

You could sell your card and get a HD6870 instead, they're not usually that expensive.

I was under the impression that sli'd 280's, or the entire 2xx card didn't support three screen in sli?

isn't nvidia surround and eyefinity something only the newer cards have?

According to Nvidia, not the entire 2xx line supports the feature. It appears GTX260 and above would while GTS250 and below would not.
