Games on Server 2008 R2

Thread Starter
So MS is giving out copies of Windows Server 2008 R2 to students with .edu email addresses, and I'm downloading a copy now.

Now, I've heard of issues with Server 2008 original and SP2. However, to my understanding these issues were due to differences in codebase between Server 2008 and Vista. Vista was Windows 6.0, 2008 was WindowsNT 6.0 or something like that, I don't know. But a number of games had issues running on Server 2008.

However, all I've heard indicates that Server 2008 R2 is simply Windows 7 Ultimate ++. They both have the same code base, and are basically the same operating system, just one has more features. Correct?

So do games all function correctly on Server 2008 R2?

Don't answer if you don't know for sure.

Windows server 2008 R2 is fine for gaming. I've got a rig downstairs with a stripped-down R2, and so far it's run all my games fine. You may want to look into this or this guide to turn Server R2 into windows 7, minus a few useless background tasks.

And, as you said, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are built upon the Windows NT 6.1.
