Biggest reason is that onboard sound almost always has some sort of background noise that you can never get rid of. Enjoy hearing your HD spin up through the headphones?

To the OP. I don't think HT Omega offers a PCI-e card but you can look. I haven't been to their site in a while. The Claro XT is awesome. The Xonar linup would be my next choice. Pretty sure that comes in PCI-e.
