EVGA E760 Classified boot & raid question

Hey guys,

I'm not new to computers in any way shape or form. But, I have weirdish problem.
Maybe I'm wrong here. But, can't you have a single boot drive & a cpl of drives in RAID0 using the regular ( black ) plugs on the board without having to go to the ( red ) JMicron plugs for your RAID..?

What I have is a single OCZ Vertex2 40gig & a cpl of OCZ Vertex 30 gig SSD drives.
What I want to do is run the 40 as the boot & RAID the other two to run some games on.When I go to the Bios & switch from IDE to AHCI RAID the bios shows all 3 drives as SCSI.
I then reboot & hit control I to run the set up for RAID. I build my array with the two 30 gig drives. The screen shows the 40 an a non raid drive.
I exit, reboot with Win 7 in it.I get to the screen to select which drive to install Windows on & it wont let me set it to the 40 gig drive.
It only wants to install Windows to the RAID array..!
I think I'm missing a step here or something. I shouldn't have to run the 40 off the black plugs & do my RAID array off the JMicron.
Can't the Intel X58 chipset run the drives like this..?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Have you tried installing windows and then adding the disks you want to raid? What do you have against using the jmicron ports?

So it's the 40 G that you want for the system(OS) and the 2x30 for games right?
because in your OP you said I only wants to install to the raid array.

Anyway try this for a change up disconnect the 2x30 drives and leave the 40 connected install win and then install your drives after the system drive has been laid out.

I dont know that board so black plugs and red plugs makes no sense.

Black are controlled by the southbridge ICH10R Raid controller, red are controlled by the third party JMicron Raid controller. For raid ICH10R is undeniably better, but for single drives they should be equal.

EVGA told me not to use the jmicron as the speed is better with the intel controller.

OP have you tried setting up the raid the switching the mode to achi and then creating the boot disk?

Thanks for the responses guys,

I wanted to stay away from using the JMicron for the RAID. I heard it was not nearly as good as the ICH10R controller.
I dunno, you think it would be so simple to do this.No issue.
I did in fact try once before to just do the install to the 40gig drive.Set the bios to AHCI.
Did the install & all was good.I then went back in the bios & set the AHCI to RAID. (You have to do this or you can't get the RAID option to show up. )
Then went & made the array.
When I booted it up after the array was set I got a BSOD.And, that really sucked.
What I had noticed was as soon as I set AHCI section to AHCI RAID it turned all drives to SCSI.
I think I would need the boot to still be seen as IDE to work right. I dunno, this is perplexing.
Perhaps the X58 Chip just wont allow a IDE to one drive & RAID at the same time..?

Cheers, makes perfect sense now.

Why not try the Jmicron for your single and the south bridge for the raid.
That is if the Jmicron suports singles.

Or maybe you have found the limits on your board.

set up your raid array and unplug them, plug the single drive back in, and leave the bios set to raid, and install windows. then plug your raid drives back in once you can get into windows.

Well, that's an option I hadn't thought of... lol
I'll give that way a whirl tomorrow. :-)

It just seems funky that you couldn't set the raid & install to the non raided drive.
One more tidbit of info...
On one attempt to get this to work> I got Windows installed. When I went & took a look at the drives I could see where the OS had been installed on the 40.But, a 100mb partition had been installed on the 2 raided drives.
When I pulled the Windows DVD from the optical drive & reset the bios to boot from the 40 gig drive... it said the OS was missing from the selected drive.
Now how & the H*LL could it install the OS to the 40gig drive but put the boot on the RAIDed array..?
Funky stuff....

Like I said tho. I'm no stranger to PC's. I've been a system builder for over 10 yrs now.I just had to post this & see if anybody could make sense of this.
It's been frikin testing my patience... lol
Just as an FYI. I did have the 40 running with Windows & the RAID on the JMicron. It worked fine.Kinda low #'s on the RAID.So, I thought I'd run the RAID on the ICH10R & see what it got me.. lol

Thanks much for the responces guys.
I appreciate the feedback.
