Oblivion uses <50% of GPU?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, this is my first post - It's a long one. I didnt know whether to put it here or the NVIDIA section, but here it is.

Oblivion is a very demanding game... So why is my GPU usage less than 50%, even when the framerate dips from 60 to 40? I would really like to use ALL of my GTX470SC for a smoother gameplay.

The GTX770 is running at factory "superclock" settings (625/1250/1701). In-game settings are at max, with distant land and buildings on. HDR is on, 16xAA is forced through Nvidia control panel. DxDiag is below, with a link to a screenshot. In the purple OSD, it shows 36% GPU usage (the 46% is fan speed). Could this possibly be a CPU bottleneck? Oblivion only uses one of my 4 cores, and there is limited activity on the other three that I assume to be background tasks and such. Either way, I should at least be stressing my card more than halfway.

OC to about 3.0GHz+ if possible.
And see if there's a difference.

No I dont believe their is a problem there, the 470 is a pretty powerful card. Oblivion isnt demanding as you might think from todays standards. The 470 was released way after Oblivion and it was designed to render more GPU intense games.

Is V-sync on? I get this on fallout with vsync on, it seams it only requires 50% of my gpu to get 60fps, it dips down to 40fps when loading new scenery but I belive this is a hard drive bottleneck.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose I can overclock my CPU a bit, but setting it at 3GHz would only be an increase of 170MHz. Even at stock clocks, I think there is no reason that the game would only access 36% of the GPU while putting out 44FPS. Wouldnt it utilize more, and put out the full 60 frames?

@Pyra, yes VSYNC is turned on in the in-game settings. My monitor is 60Hz. Do you think maybe forcing VSYNC through the driver and turning it off in-game might yield better results? It might be a hard drive bottleneck after all. Hard drive is a Caviar Black WD7501AALS

are you at a prolonged period of less than 60 fps? or is it a quick drop while travelling around the world? if its the latter it is a normal symptom of the game engine. If it is a prolonged period of slow down try overclocking your cpu and get back to us with the results.

It runs at a constant 60FPS most of the time. When in the open areas with alot going on (water, distant land, trees, NPCs or enemies) it drops as low as 40, with some momentary downward spikes to 25 that last less than a second.

EDIT: you know, after all this wondering, I never once thought it might be the game engine. But the Gamebryo engine isnt exactly the smoothest out there.

The engine has its problems but I think 25fps even momentarily is a little low for your setup, I could be wrong, but when I had my HD 4870 I don't think that dropped below 60 unless loading... don't own the game anymore though so I can't be sure.

Edit: forgot to ask, are you running any mods?

Yes, I am running several mods. All the unofficial patches, streamline (I have all of streamline off except the FOV changer), Qarl's texture patch, Natural Environments 2.1.3, and a minimap mod.

EDIT: I just checked in OBMM, I also have a hi-res terrain map mod, Landscape LOD texture replacement, Better Grass Without Tiling, and A Takes All.

Then I can help no more, I have never ran any of these mods and have no clue how they effect performance.

I would try overclocking that CPU though, It can only help.

Cheers,
Pyra.
