[CNN] Daughter downloads 10-billionth app, mom hangs up on Apple - Page 7

She should make an app or song real quick like and spend all 10K on it so she gets some real moneys.

Cool on Apples part though, I hadn't even heard of the contest until now.

Having a friend share an album with you over the internet is no different than borrowing a friend's cd. Get over it.

JUST have to comment on this.. you're totally naive. I've worked in the music industry (directly w lawyers and labels) for the last 6 years, with Universal Records being my main employer/employee. The lack of album sales HURTS the labels which in turn really really hurts the artist. All new acts and plenty of the bands from the last couple of years have to sign "360" deals where the label gets a cut of their merch, touring, publishing, etc. Labels have to keep making money and they simply aren't on albums or singles anymore. They are ALL dipping into artists cuts in touring etc. So now not only are artists never making anything on albums, but everything else they use for their bread and butter, they have to share. This has happened because of file sharing. So yes, illegal DLing has really hurt artists.

I'm not saying there's anything to be done about it, downloading will always happen, just know the justification "i support the artist" is totally false. If you'd just admit to yourself you're a thief and just be willing to live with that reality I'd probably have more respect for you.

OT haha that's great! I definitely would have hung up too! Well, considering I've never bought an app from the appstore xD

I honestly would've done the same if I didn't realize the promotion for the billionth app was near or just recently was near completion.

They can't. The best I can estimate from click trackers is that have done way less than 2 billion apps for iphone and ipad. Which leaves media streams which couldn't possibly hit much over a billion with number of users unless they just sit around downloading comedy central shows to their phone 24/7. Which leaves some 7 to 8 billion worth of song downloads.
Since all the hottest selling albums in history add up to about 2 billion sales......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_best-selling_albums#Best-selling_albums_by_country

And there have only been some 40 or so 1 million plus ringtone downloads awarded gold and platinum status it just doesn't seem very plausible.

Apple users are kind of like linux geeks if Linus would just dress up in black turtle necks and throw big numbers around that told them how important and popular they were. And called every release of linux magical and terrific and just beautiful.
Lots of iphone apps get 60 to 40k downloads. But they just don't have the numbers to whip out a 10 billion number and be believable.
It would take the entire computer industry it's entire life to pop a number like this. And since it took till like 1988 to break a million pc's. You could safely throw out all of the 80's as rounding errors. You could probably pull that number from 1990 to 2005.

I'm sorry, but trying to call me a thief just because I recorded a song I heard on the radio with a cassette tape is retarded. How scared were record labels when they first starting playing music on the radio? We've heard it all before.

That same kind of illogical thinking tried to kill off VHS and Betamax. Oh noes, no one is going to go to the movie theatre anymore or buy tapes.

Learn to evolve or die. Don't try and hold back civilization because you can't adapt. No one cares about your antiquated ways of thinking.

Mainly off topic, but well put. Funny, made me remember taping music off the radio when i was like 10. That was 24 years ago and nobody cried pirate back then. Artists are robbed by their labels and producers, not the mass media. We're just watchin and listenin.
