For the applications you mentioned, definitely go with a Athlon II x4. The L3 cache doesn't make a HUGE difference (1-4 FPS depending on the game) as seen here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ache,2416.html

But the difference between a quad over a dual in the applications that can use it are huge. And while the Phenom II X2s have a chance of unlocking, it really isn't worth buying one in anticipation of a quad only to be disappointed.
Why the Athlon? Is it the clock speed? if it is I can always OC it.

I think he meant Phenom II, which you should go.

BTW it's a big chance to unlock L3 cache at Athlon IIx4 using same ACC function.
With Athlon you get HT4000 , 4 cores, L3 potential, and higher clock speed.
I've use Athlon II 620 not long ago very good CPU, I do music re-mastering,

Yeah I read the difference is the Phenom has the L3 Cache which the Athlon Family does not, the only thing the Athlon has to it's advantage is its low power consumption, but in the end the Phenom is better then the Athlon when compared, the L3 cache makes it just that much better in terms of performance.

I have made my mind up, I'm getting the Phenom 2 920 based on these assumptions, thank you all for the help in helping figure out what the right choice would be.
