First time folding. Got some questions :p

Hey all. Yesterday I tried a bit of folding. Could someone look at the screenshot below and tell me if everything is working fine? I know for example in one of the clients I didnt put in my passkey.. Why is that?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Also guys, why does my GTX470 do a noise when folding? I don't notice it in games. This is really annoying cause my PC is in my bedroom. Is there any fix or something?

And does folding with the graphic card reduce the PPD from the CPU? And why is that?

I really like folding, I got a spare i7 950 and a gigabyte x58a-ud3r I might put for 24/7 use. Just need some RAM, PSU and a VGA once i get some money. Will folding work ok with 2GB ram only?

Cheers

Everything looks fine. Folding with your GPU does not affect the PPD of the CPU. THey are using separate things.

Unsure about the noise, hopefully someone else can answer that. =/

2GB I think SHOULD be fine. I'm still sort of new, but from what I learned so far, it's mostly dependent on the CPU.

Cheers to folding!

Wrong. The GPU still uses some CPU cycles in order to run. This is why many people do not recommend folding with ATI cards because the loss of CPU SMP points is generally more than the ATI card will put out.

As far as the noise... that would probably be because the card is running at 100%, whereas most games do not push you card to its absolute limit.

I'm not sure how memory dependent an i5 is, but I know that when I'm folding on my i7 920, I'm using at least 3 GB.

The passkey is a way to keep track of what WUs (Work Units) a specific piece of hardware has submitted. This is necessary to recieve bonus points (points awarded for how quickly you submit a WU). You will recieve bonus points when folding with a -bigadv flag on your cpu client.

Before you receive an bonus points folding -bigadv, you must complete 10 smp WUs under a passkey. So, I suggest you get your passkey here now, that way, when you are ready for -bigadv, you can take full advantage of the points.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

It looks as if your GPU client isn't turned on (it is red in HFM), although it may just be that HFM hasn't recognized it was turned on yet, if you just started the client.

Is the noise a high pitch squealing? If so, it is a squealing capacitor. It is fairly common and only happens when a part is under heavy load. If you do a search for it, I'm sure many results will come up. It only happens while folding because folding is much more intensive than any game, or even any benchmark.

Yes, having a gpu (particularly a Fermi or ATI card) folding along with the cpu. This shouldn't be too much with only a single gpu, however it is because the gpu client is taking up some of the cpu's resources to fold. This can be avoided by adding the -smp 7 flag (tells the cpu to only use 7 of its cores).

If you go and fold -bigadv, I would recommend getting at least 4gb. My folding computer, running -bigadv and one gpu client, is currently using 2.87gb. People report that the client will perform best one triple channel memory, however, this is a minimal difference.

Oh! Thanks for the clarification! I guess since I was running an nvidia card, I was told that it wouldn't make much of a difference.

The 470 noise you hear is probably capacitor squealing. It's normal for them to do that under intensive loads. There's no fix for it really. Well unless you turn up your fan so that you can't hear it .

Yes folding with a GPU can reduce the CPU's folding ability but only marginally. I'm running 3 470's and it takes about 12% away from my CPU. There are ways to minimize this if you are folding with lots of GPU's and doing bigadvs. With one GPU you though you won't really notice, especially if you are doing normal SMPs.

As for your seperate folding machine 2GB should be fine for the most so long as not too many other applications are running. You should probably have at least 4 GB if you are going to be doing bigadv's.

Turning the fan up is a good idea, however I bought an HAFx NOT to hear the 470's fan in the first place.. hahaha

lol Yeah I've got the HAF-X as well and I've always heard them for the most part when they're folding. Granted I want my cards to run somewhat cool, 65-80C. In SLI I only needed to be at about 65% fan speed but with Tri-SLI I've gotta be at 90%+ to keep the cards all cool. At night time I give them a nice bit of Michigan winter air though and they get down to the 50's.
