I hear ya. It seems that everything after 10.4/5 started to send the 4800 series cards backwards. I would love to see an AMD guru break into the 4800s to get DX11 out of them. There is nothing really "wrong" or outdated with these cards, sans DX11. Mine still play everything I want maxed out.
I remember reading a comparison of all the driver updates on the 4000/5000/6000 cards, now I cant find it.

Still can't boot into Windows ok still since I tried this. I vouched to never update my drivers again till I bought an Nvidia card, and this is my punishment for doing so.

I can't revert drivers either and go back to 10.4. Just won't work dammit! I can't even open up GPU-Z without the system taking a dump.

11.1 - Installed over 10.12, display driver crash within hours.

11.1a - Completely removed my 5850 + its software via Device Manager, installed 11.1a and got display driver crashes days later.

10.12 - Completely removed my 5850 + its software via Device Manager, installed 10.12 and it's fine so far.

Sigh....

I couldn't boot into windows either. At one point I finally managed to by some miracle. Removed all softwares and driver, did the ccleaner, rebooted and ONLY installed driver 11.1. No problems in a week now. Even been oc'ing the card a bit.

Wall of text/rage inc.

So here I am, typing this after a reformat. I'd like to personally thank the 11.1 drivers for making me really angry and putting me through lots of problems.

I reformatted because it was time for a reformat. It was over a year, system was just getting full of crap, so I did the yearly reformat. I reformat, install good ol' 10.12, everything's fine. I see that 11.1 launches, see a bunch of good comments from people saying they've seen nice FPS increases/general performance increases (even people without a 6xxx series).

I install em' over 10.12, restarted, everything was good at glance, but after a few hours of WoW (a game that's never ever been graphically demanding) I get a display driver crash. So I'm pissed, but I know it's easily solvable... Guess again. I uninstall 11.1, and give 11.1a hotfix drivers a shot, but same issue happens. Instead of hours, its days. So I had hope, but it was shot down even worse this time.

So I'm mad at the 11.x drivers at this point. I decide to go back to good ol' 10.12 and just sit at it. I uninstall 11.1a, reinstall 10.12, restart, everything is fine. Days later my Windows kept switching from Aero to Basic randomly. I launch BC2, with my sig rig I had 30-40 TOPS FPS not even in a fighting situation... So I reformatted, couldn't take the games anymore.

So here I am after the reformat, got everything situated. Download 10.12, install them. The install finished rather quickly and my screen didn't go black like it usually does when it installs drivers... But it said it was finished. Nothing happened after that, so I just restarted manually.

I come back to the same small resolution, as if the drivers weren't even installed. There's no CCC running in the taskbar, but it WAS running in processes. I opened it up, and it's blank... nothing there.

At this point I'm literally FED up with ATI's drivers. I do a system restore, sets me back 20 or so minutes and now here I am typing this as 47 recommended updates are installing... all over again.

I installed them again, and it magically works this time! I am so mad right now ._.

I'm not going to be "that guy" that whenever they get driver issues says they're going green or switching to Nvidia... But what I went through was really ridiculous, and reading this thread it seems lots of people are having similar issues. Overall, I'm just disappointed in ATI. Makes me wonder if they even test their drivers on multiple series of cards before they officially release them.

Sell your ATi 5850, Go Nvidia. I was there. I had the 5970 and I felt the same way... Disappointed. Went to Nvidia and all of the issues went away. Driver upgrades take 5 mins. Never had an issue. No blue screens nothing. Every game I run is perfect...Why put up with this?

Like I said in my last sentence, I'm not just going to switch because of one driver issue. I've never had them before until 11.1. However, if it becomes a thing that every time I update now I go through that, I won't think twice about switching.

Funny I had a nightmare upgrading from 10.8 to 10.12.. I finally got the damn drivers to work somehow so I think I'll stick with them for a while

not that i favor either company, but ive had the opposite problem... every nvidia card ive owned (6) have all had problems with drivers whereas ati/amd cards ive owned (6 also) have yet to give me any problems as far as drivers go. also, after installing 11.1 i was able to play black ops SMOOTHLY for the first time in almost 3 months. just my 2c
