8800gts noob, need help :)

Thread Starter
In the summer of 2009 I scraped together cash to build a low budget gaming comp from ebay. Here is the specs:

Azza Solano 1000 Case
Windows 7 x64 bit
EVGA 8800 GTS 640mb (1) Running SLI Cards.
EVGA 8800 GTS 640mb (2) This one got shipped to me in a Pizza box
8gb OCZ Reaper 800mhz /Gold Ram 1066mhz
Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz CPU w/ Scythe Heatsink
Apevia Java 640watt PSU
Gigabyte GA-650sli-DS4 Motherboard
WD 640gb Green Caviar Harddrive
WD 500gb Green Caviar Harddrive
Dell 2009W Monitor

My question is: did I buy the correct stuff? Did I buy compatible hardware? Currently the comp has been awesome with a few glitches along the way.

Graphics: I currently vary how I run these cards. Some of the games like GTA4 do not like SLI, and other games seem to. Do others have this issue? I have the Physx setting on auto. I am using EVGA precision, 1000 memory, 80 fan speed, 1600 shader, 690 core. Both cards are linked and synced. It becomes unstable around 1050 memory and 1800 shader. Any suggestions on any of it?

Memory: You can see I bought 2 different sets of 2x2. I got all of this stuff for cheap which is why. Should I have focused more on getting memory with that was the same? And everytime I try to up the mhz it only sticks for a while before it sets itself back to auto.

The CPU: I have tried OCing it and even though all my calculations seem correct even following someone with the exact same setup on you tube, my system becomes unstable. The most it has ever gone up to is 2.69.

I am not sure if I am just that much of a noob or If I am not setting something correctly.

Games I can run on full settings: WoW, SC2, TerranXT3, WoT, GTA4, BF2142.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If you ever tried loading it to 640w it will kill your PC
As long as you keep it under half load you should be alright i assume.

Have a good day

*Edit

8800Gts? its a old school card. The 8800 series is from 2006-2007

I think you should have tried getting more modern cards..

OCZ ram has a bad reputation so dont be surprised if it isnt stable at stock clocks.

as for ocing your graphic cards. When in SLI the Max OC drops since both cards need to be stable. Dont be surprised.

should i just run card 1 as the main and have card 2 as the physx, and should I just sell the OCZ and go with a different company entirely? Yes those cards have some age but I figured running them SLI woulda been good enough. Plus the games I play didnt require a huge card.

Stuff: It all works, so no worries. There definitely could be more optimal matching of components, but it all works, so whatever.

GFX cards: Don't remember the 8800gts's, but if temperatures are okay, you could try overvolting them if you feel you need more performance. Also, your performance might be limited by the RAM that you have on the cards--since available VRAM doesn't double with SLI, you still only have 640MB of VRAM--which might not be quite enough for some games at 16x10 resolution. Definitely if you go higher in res, you'll want to get rid of those cards and get a single, more powerful card.

Memory: Honestly doesn't matter, especially if you're not overclocking them. The modules will default to the lowest rated speed of the various modules if you didn't get matching speeds, and also to the looser RAM timings if they aren't rated for the same timings. But if they're all of the same speed/spec's, it doesn't matter what the decal on them is--chances are, the modules all came from the same manufacturer anyway. The OCZ should be just fine--though ensure (via CPU-Z) that the modules are running with the voltage that they're rated at. Often times, motherboards will run memory at just slightly lower than what the modules are rated for, which can cause instabilities even at stock speeds (has happened to me more than once).

CPU: You should be able to get way more than 30MHz OC on that DS4 motherboard. What OC options are you using? Are you keeping the RAM at a low enough speed to ensure that the RAM isn't holding you back while you up your CPU?

Well I tried to push the CPU to 3.0, and it failed. The memory would onyl go to 800mhz. There are allot of settings that I am still not used to on the MB so I am not sure if I did/didnt select something and thats why it failed. Thanks

you should have gotten some 8800GT's
8800GT is to 8800GTS as GTX460 is to GTX465.
ive owned 2 8800GT's, and in SLi they perform like a GTX280! they rape!
8800GTS SLi isnt as good tho. probably performs like a GTX275 or GTX260 216sp
i suggest unlinking the cards. dont OC the memory so much either! it makes the whole card unstable. find max core/shader OC first then find max memory.

how much did u pay for those? you could have bought 2 BRAND NEW GTS 450s for like...200 bucks or so.

anything that has apevia on it is CRAP. ive owned an apevia PSU and case...
PSU asploded and i sledgehammer'd it
case had no ventilation an USB broke. no space either. now its just an ugly broken and dusty ricer case :/

from then on i have vowed to NEVER BUY APEVIA AGAIN!
stay away from Ultra too. killed my damn HD4890

OCZ RAM isnt the best... but it should get the job done. next time stick with Corsair, Mushkin, and G.skill.

i dont OC intel so i cant help you there lol
but did u raise voltage at all? you could have a poop CPU because usually CPUs can get a few hundred Mhz with stock volts.
im still not sure, ask some1 who knows more about intel OCing lol

and i dont reccomend buying all your stuff from ebay. no warrenties! if your card asplodes, then your skrewed.

and keep this in mindL
'cheap thing no good and good thing no cheap!'
its true!

That PSU might kill your Computer one day... Just saying.

but as far as the cards go Unlink the cards, get one card, and OC it see how stable it is. now when you run 2 cards your OC will be slightly lower as you have to have 2 cards at a stable speed. So it might take sometime to sync the OC correctly.
