Xeon E5620 vs Xeon W3550

alright, so i currently have evga x58 3x sli mobo and i7 920 and looking to upgrade because i can't really get this thing upto 200 blk for some reason.

would you take W3550 w/ R3E board OR E5620 w/ evga x58 4x sli classified OR is it not even worth upgrading it?

mainly for gaming purpose and some video lendering/editing but not all the way... price for used setup for two of those xeon setups are about same...

i would just not upgrade, doesnt make a lot of sense at this point right now. You would barely get much improvement in performance and you would waste a lot of money for a little improvement. If you really want to upgrade you could try getting a SandyBridge CPU or you could just keep trying to overclock for a bit and get the IvyBridge when it is released at the end of the year. smile.gif Although, i dont think that this is really worth it either since the i7 920's are so fast anyways.

You should be able to get to whatever OC you are trying to get even if your BCLK wont get up to 200, although, almost all of these chips can get there. How long have you tried to OC it and have you looked for help with the OC on here? There are a lot of people who would be more than happy to help you out with your overclock if you are having trouble! smile.gif

i looked into SB also but it only supports dual channel so i sorta opt out. if i upgrade to those xeon setup and sell my current setup, i'll be out $100~$200 depending on how much i sell mine for but yea your point does make sense.

i asked around and made few thread for help but didn't get much response on it. i think part of the blame goes to evga board typically having problem around 200blk (not all but generally) and some goes to my C0 stepping 920 chip and of course, most of the reason why is because i'm so noobie to OC world in general. wink.gif

with that being said, any comparison insights on those two xeon setup?

well i do not know a whole lot about the Xenon chips, but i can say that unless you are planning on getting the SR-2 and using dual CPUs it really is not worth getting the server cpus. Between the two i would go for the E5620, although it is very close. You can overclock that cpu to match the other one's clock speed, but since it is based off of 32nm tech, it will be a bit more sensitive to overclocks. Like i said before though, it really is not worth upgrading at all. Just try to OC your cpu a little more and you will get to 4.0 i am sure. If you must buy something to try and get a better overclock, then i would suggest trying out a new mobo for a better overclock. I dont have a lot of knowledge of the mobo's and how well they overclock but i would post in the Intel Motherboards section of the forums for the answer to that one. My mobo is very good for example, but my CPU is a D0 stepping one, so you may not be able to get to the 4.0 or 4.2 that you want with that baseclock.

Just a thought, have you made sure that the baseclock will not go up to 200 because of the cpu? It could be the RAM that you have or the Northbridge of the mobo may be causing some instability.

If you plan on running any gaming servers, I say to go for the second choice. If not, I wouldn't bother.
