Having some issues with my graphics card need help!

Hello I recently upgraded from an 8800gtx to a ati 6850. I installed the drivers logged into a game and my fps were extremely low, normally i get hundreds of fps in the game I was playing but it was staying as low as 20fps. I then tried another game and my monitor turned off, crashing my computer.

I've tried the drivers that came with the video card, and the recent 10.10 ati catalyst drivers. And both got the same problem, could anyone help me out? whats going on with my video card? Did I just get a bad card and need to return it?

Well I just wanted to at first test out my new graphics card so I ran a game called "Planetside" to see what performance I got (its an old game). With my old card (8800gtx) I would get 700fps when no one was around, when I installed this new card (ati 6850) my fps stays at around 15-30 and it is extremely laggy. I then tried World of warcraft my fps seemed far to low for how good the 6850 is, and my monitor shut off on its own and my computer locked up when playing world of warcraft.

Does anyone know whats wrong? I've tried a lot of the 6850 drivers and I'm still getting this same huge lag problem, maybe my video card is bad?

Try this: Download/install DriverSweeper (Google it). Run it in "Safe Mode With Networking". Use it to wipe ALL of your graphics drivers, including the nVidia ones. Reboot your system. Go to ATI's website and redownload the fresh drivers from there, along with Catalyst Control Center. Use the latest driver vers. for your 6850. If that doesn't solve it, contact the company the manufactured the card for support.

Hmm... here's another thought, before trying any of the above, consider... Is the machine in question the one in your profile "2 the Max"? If so, part of the problem might be that you are using XP but trying to use too much memory (RAM + the GPU's memory) than XP can run effectively. I'm not "tech" enough to explain it more than that, but try removing a stick of RAM, boot your system, and try playing then. If that solves it, just leave that stick of RAM out, or upgrade to W7.

Just tried running driver sweeper, but it wasn't in safe mode and that didn't work, right now safe mode won't boot up for me, its been that way for months now.

I tried using 1 stick of ram, still had the problem

I think I may try to reformat and if that doesn't fix it, then its a bad graphics card and I'll just send it back. Any additional help from anyone would be nice, thanks!

Safe mode won't start? And you are hitting f8 constantly while it's booting? That doesn't sound like a graphics card issue. I don't know much, but that sounds more like a mobo prob, or maybe a corruption in the OS? Maybe a RAM issue....

Do you still have your old VGA? If so, re-install it and see how it works.

You are running 8gb of RAM? Why? That is complete overkill on an XP gaming machine. I still think it might be a mem. issue; been there, done that. Remove all but one stick of RAM next to see what happens. You'd be running 2gb of RAM then, right? If it still is acting wack, do you have any 1gig sticks laying around? If so, try running your machine w/ just one stick of 1gb RAM. Man, I hope you get this solved!

That's a typo in my system specs, its meant to say 2x2gb hehe. I've only been getting this issue today with my new graphics card, yesterday I was using my old graphics card and had no performance issues in any game. I'm about to get a few new parts for my system soon, cause this system is like 3 years old now. But like I said I had no problems yesterday with my old graphics card but I tried to install a new one and I'm getting extreme lag in games that I play, even though this new card is twice as good as my old one.

Oh and are ati cards compatible with nvidia motherboards? I have the 750i could that be the problem at all? I'm gonna probably send this graphics card back and get a new one from newegg....and I just edited my details

NVidia mobo/ATi graphics should cause no issues. I'm starting to agree w/ you on the RMA thing. Newegg is great about that too, so getting a new card shouldn't be an issue. Good luck!
