blowing out of the case/sucking air out, not in.

what?

you have fan in the side of the case and you are asking if it should suck air out from case or push the air to the case?

I know in the HAF series the side fan sucks air into the case. Reasoning for this, is that it brings fresh air in that will cool the gpu's, motherboard, and possibly even give some cooler air for the cpu cooler.

Used as an exhaust I don't know how well it would work.

well usually in but if you have fans on the front of the case then its out, think about it, it needs air to blow out in the first place so you need an in fan no matter what

It will also depend on which way your other fans are blowing, you don't want them all doing the same thing.

@mauser +1

On my Antec 900 I have the two fronts as intake and the top as exhaust. My side fan is set to intake. I also have 120mm in the rear that is set to exhaust.

EDIT: And in my case it is pointing at my GPU per the post above.

Pushing air IN down onto the mobo/CPU cooler etc...
It's best to have a "down-firing" CPU cooler like the Big Typhoon for this.

Generally you use front and side fans for intake and top and rear fans for exhaust.
