20 pin power supply with 24pin mobo?

Hey guys I was just wondering whether you could power a 24pin mobo with a 20 pin power supply. Now when I ran my system with the 20 pin power supply, it ran the initial start up except after rebooting my back panal ports lost all power, including my mouse, keyboard and monitor. When I plugged in my 24pin power supply everything ran perfectly. Would I need to buy a 20 to 24pin power supply adapter, or could it be the issue that my 20 pin power supply was too weak? Although I have a hard time believing my 300w could not power my rig. Any insight as to why this happens?

System: Sempron 140, Biostar A880G+ mobo, 1 HDD, 1 PCIxE network card and 1 CD Drive connected.

20 pin power supply is 300w

24 pin power supply is 430w

You don't need a 20 to 24 pin converter. The pc in question should have no problem running on a 20 pin connector.

that truly depends on the board. years ago i did it successfully with an asus board.

but that was only until i could a get proper psu.

hmm, I thought that too, but why does my mobo fail to power up the back panel when I have the 300w plugged in? My rig is rate to only take 243w at best.

It's probably due to the 300w beeing faulty. It should be capable to power that sempy with no problem.

A 20 to 24 pin adapter would make no difference, since it is getting the same power from the same power supply. All the 20-24 pin adapter does is split the 12v+, 3.3v+, 5v+ and common ground from the 20 pin into the 4 pins missing. Motherboards don't require these inputs to function, but for stability and especially overclocking they are needed.

I would agree it is probably a PSU issue.

To add.... If the PSU only has 20-pins, then it is ancient. A 300w PSU from 5 years ago would probably rated 200-250w today. We have shifted to primary +12v.

Then take in account of cap wear....
