As for my segfault, is it bc vector.size() returns and unsigned int and I'm using it to compare things?
i believe you need to cast vector.size() to an int like this:

if( ( (int) bin.size() ) <j )

Grr... I tried that and it's still not working... I'm really not sure what to do at this point. I only have a general idea about what a segfault even is.

a segfault occurs when your program runs out of allocated memory or tries to access a protected area of memory. an infinite loop is just one type of thing that would cause a seg fault. seg faults should produce a core dump that you can analyze in a debugger to figure out why your program crashed.
gdb and dbx are both good debuggers if youre on a unix system.

Ok. I looked up how to use gdb but I'm still not quite sure how to use it right. I compiled my program using the -g flag but then I'm not sure what to do once I'm in gdb.

the first thing you should do is use the 'run' command to execute the program from within gdb. after it seg faults, i believe the 'bt' (backtrace) command will print out all the events that led to the seg fault. you can then step through that output and print variables and try to find out what happened. you can say things like 'print x' to find out the value of x at that point in the program.

heres a good example of examining a core dump in gdb: http://www.network-theory.co.uk/articles/gccdebug.html

and heres one of many good gdb reference cards: http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/GDB-Commands.html

Btw, thanks for all the help! +rep to you sir for the help and the awesome Hobbes avatar. I've gotten gdb working and discovered my problem. I hadn't initialized two of my vectors but was trying to place values in them.

Ok. So I'm so close to getting this code working, but now when running my program it's outputting the answer, which still isn't quite correct, but it's also giving me a "glibc detected: free(): invalid pointer" message. This is only when I run it on a linux machine. I run the exact same program on my macbook and it doesn't give me any warnings.
