first real mod/upgrade...a couple questions

Thread Starter

hey there, been working on a little project for a while now (moved it to be my sigrig). an upgrade to an aging hp compaq circa-2002.
it's been around a bit....it spent more than a year with its side panel off.....initially because it was a hot
summer and it was an old house with poor cooling options....then one day the stock psu died, and the replacement
had trouble fitting inthe case...eventually being moved to a spot on the floor nearby, with a 12'' box fan blowing
into the case!

at any rate, i built a new computer and then old one became semi-retired. ultimately, i gave it to my dad and
was to help him set it up so he could use it at his business (for both business and goofing off).

so far, i've added a somewhat poor/slow case fan as a front intake (amazingly, this computer was built with
one case fan...the rear exhaust). also added a 2nd hard drive, and replaced 1 256mb ram stick with a 512mb.
this was all free, castoff stuff, so hey, not too shabby.

next i installed windows 7. but, alas, there was an issue with
the onboard audio that the win7 upgrade advisor hadnt warned me about.

in terms of other mods, i'm going to paint the front bezel orange, looking into getting some orange led fans! also some case feet and a handle. plus some work with the nibbler on the case. and as you'll see reading on, some hardware upgrades...

anyway, this'll be documented better later in a soon-to-come case-mod worklog thread. currently i'm
still deciding on some new parts. hoping i can get some advice here. apologies in advance for my dumb questions!
i'm still a newb compared to the wealth of experience here at OCN. any assistance appreciated!

first off, in terms of the sound card issue, any recommendations regarding bringing an older pc up to spec with
windows 7? i found about 3 cards on newegg that seemed to fit the bill. think i've settled on this one, it's $20:

SIIG IC-510012-S2 5.1 Channels 16-bit PCI Interface SoundWave
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829270008

so yeah, any thoughts on this, or recommendations in terms of sound cards, throw em my way.

next thing i was curious about is ram. looking at my cpu-z info, under 'memory' it says DRAM Frequency 132.9 MHz.
does this mean that 133Mhz is the fastest speed i can utilize? currently, i have 1x512mb 2700 166MHz, and
1x512mb 3200 200MHz. so if i am understanding this correctly, the extra oomph these ram are capable of, cant
be utilized. what am i curious about is, is there any detriment to using ram built faster than what your mobo
is rated for?

was looking at this, since newegg has ram at 15% off right now:
G.SKILL 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory Model F1-3200PHU1-1GBNS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231046

the other thing i was wondering about is upgrading the cpu. in cpu-z, under 'cpu', it says 'Rated FSB 531.7Hz'.
so, this means my cpu's bus is 533Mhz? to upgrade this cpu, i can only use a cpu that has that same bus of 533,
is that right? it's a pentium 4 2.4GHz Socket 478. i'm looking at replacing it with this, faster and twice the
cache for $16:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8AGHz 533MHz 1MB Socket 478 CPU

will this work, or is there something i'm missing?

and probably a dumb question, but what does the 'A' mean (as in 2.8AGHz)?

thanks in advance for any responses, will be happy to rep

first off I would try and get 2GB of ram if you can for running windows 7. I know 1GB is the minimum but it will run alot better with 2GB. Also it seems like alot of your questions don't really have to do with case moding, you'll get a better response if you ask the individual questions in the correct place on the forum. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, good luck.

dont go for sound card, install drivers for onboard sound. it happened to me.

you NEED more than 1gb ram, i tried running 7 on 786 mb, and it was terrible, i dont think 1gb is much better go for 2

yes you can change CPU, not much point though, as you wont notice much of a difference.
