Odd sounds from hard drive?

Thread Starter
I only recently got a new hard drive for my rig. This one to be exact. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo

It's making odd noises that are hard to explain... like the drive is already warn out or something even though it's only a few weeks old. The drive light on my case lights up, I hear it, and I can feel my desk vibrate a little.

Should I be worried?

Is it clicking, or just a loud whirring?

It's closer to a loud whirring. No clicking, and I know that it's just turning it self off when it makes a quiet click.

Anything?

I wouldn't worry about it, really. New hard drives are really weird, and unfortunately it's ridiculously common that a hard drive is DOA.

When I first got my drive I was getting random freezes at some points, etc.. But it doesn't do them anymore.

Unless you start getting errors, crashes, BSODs.. I wouldn't worry too much.

Have you tried running hdtune or crystal disk info? Just to make sure temps are good and no caution lights etc...

Download wd's tools and run a scan on to make sure.

I know these spin at 5400rpm. Sound could be from it coming out of power saving mode and spinning up. Just run the test to make sure though.

I have a similar 1TB green drive. I bought it in November. It is completely silent. I honestly have to listen to even hear it clicking and the only indication that it is spinning is if I open the side of my case and touch it. It is the quietest hard disc drive I have ever owned. I think something could be wrong with yours.

Could it possibly making the sounds because it's just mounted poorly in the hard drive cage in my case?
