Phenom II X3 720 Unlock X4 Help - Page 2

Yeah, I meant unlocked. And an unlocked x3 (going from 95W to 125W initially) instantly turns into a 140W CPU or more when you raise the voltage to keep that 4th core stable because most likely like a lot of other people you will.
Yeah I know what you meant, so you are more looking at about 200W+ to get it stable and to overclock.

Look, you tried to unlock the core and it failed. That is because a core unlock is not a guarantee. I wouldn't fret about it but instead just work on getting a decent OC. You will have to decide how far you want to push things. I have an X2 unlocked to an X4 and OC'd but I am still running things on stock voltage. I could push it more but I feel no need to risk frying the hardware. If it hadn't unlocked I would have accepted that as well because I knew going into it that it was not a guarantee. So I just got lucky.

As far as your board goes it isn't necessarily a bad board. It just has limitations. So learn what those limitations are and work with them. That is what I did.

If you really want a quad core go buy one.

My 770-G45 unlocked my 720 quite effortlessly.
I believe my voltage was around 1.42V.

It wasn't 100% stable, but close to it.
I ran it @ 3.5Ghz for close to a month and was quite impressed.

It was fine for games and multi-tasking but some of the harder CPU tests gave it problems here and there. Not all chips unlock and not all unlocked cores are stable.

That exact particular motherboard's mosfets have blown with Phenom II x4 125W processors at stock (x3 unlocked is 125W). Get that core locked again, aside from consuming 125W to start with you're overvolting the cores to keep it stable. This is very dangerous. I can point you to the exact guy here who has had 125W processors, at stock, on this board and it blew on him. Twice.

Wow?!

I had my 720 at X4/3.5Ghz for almost 2 months...load and idle temps were great and it only dropped the ball on some of the harder CPU burns.

It passed some basic 2 hour CPU burns and I gamed alot with it, not to mention I multi-task like an animal on steriods. I've been an enthusiast for awhile so when doing this, I put aside expectation for problems when unlocking and overclocking, no doubt.

The 770-G45 has been a great board overall, and held 3.7Ghz X3 overclock for awhile.
I am going to build around it again, I have 8GB DDR3 Ripjaw, the 720, a 550PSU, and a 5770 laying around, going to make another build out of it, only this time I am only going to run the 720 at 3.6Ghz @ X3.

No one is saying that the motherboard isn't good, it just wasn't designed to deliver high power to hungry quad core cpu's. If I were you I wouldn't disregard the warnings and advice in this thread.

As of 2hr ago, I put my x3 740 unlocked to a x4 40, to 3.599GHz @ 1.403125V

so thats
211x17=3587 CPU but actual is 3599.2
211x13 ~ 2752MHz actual on CPU/NB @ ~1.35V
211x9 ~ 1905MHz actual on HT link
and 1694 MHz Ram on my DDR3 1600 @ 1.425V I think

The FSB reads as 211.7 in CPUz

I can probably turn down the voltage a bit, as I did not turn up a notch at a time and test, now I'm running prime95 again, so far so good 1h35m into it.
