[Shacknews] Hands-On Dawn of War 2 Retribution...

Thread Starter
full title: Hands-On Dawn of War 2 Retribution and Discussing How to Build a Better War with Relic's Jeff Lydell

Quote:
It's a phrase I loathe, but it's one that applies perfectly to 2010's landscape of quality RTS titles: "an embarrassment of riches."

While--by the end of the year--most of the gaming world was placing StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty and Civilization V on a pedestal, it was Vancouver-based developer Relic Entertainment that had kicked off the party with its critically acclaimed expansion Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising.

I thought DoW2 was such crap. Removing base building, adding cheap heroes, turning Capture Point mode basically into a glorified game of tag, smelting down balance to the basics of rock paper scissors or directional flanking...

But I have to say, Retribution is looking special. Base building is back, big armies are back, heroes are on the back burner (More like in dow1 than dow2 now), imperial guard are back, overall pop cap buffed, GFWL is removed, it's using steam automatching...

I'm a noob at DoW, and I've only played the 2 DoW2 games, but I loved them both. I have no idea what to really expect now that this one is coming out and it won't be anything like the ones I played. I can't wait though, because it still looks freaking awesome and GFWL is removed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rejoice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Retribution is going to be the most awesome RTS of 2011. This news is quite old actually, there's already been another salvo of news/previews.

Quote:
"In more ways than one, it's like the Imperial Guard is being led by General Melchett from Blackadder, who despite being more competent than his WWI counterpart, nonetheless imparts a mild sense of horror. Also, the Imperial Guard are still very much "British". Sgt. Merrick carries the torch of the old Dawn of War 1 Imperial Guard voice, while others sound more in line with the Commonwealth forces in Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts. Castor is well-spoken and shows an understanding of battlefield strategy, albeit the comfortable war-room, somewhat removed from reality type of strategy. The Baneblade is driven by Scots. The inquisitor likes to burn things."

Where does it say base building is back (besides building bunkers)? I refuse to play DoW 2 anymore without having actual strategy. It was such a joke of who can pump out troops the fastest.

lol. if you really think thats all it was about, you have never ever played the game.

Its about map control, power supply control, and using cover and buildings. Its not about how many units you have, its about how you use them.

"Did you have a question about Homeworld 3?" Lydell asked.
"Yes, actually, I did," I immediately responded, waiting for the hot video game scoops.
"Yeah, we're still not making it," he quickly shot back.
Well played.

I think (hope) he was trying to be sarcastic. What he said was actually closer to DoW gameplay than DoW2.

I seriously played DOW2 all of five minutes. Hated it.
