Best Wireless A/B/G/N PCI card? - Page 2

Buy a refurb router, set as repeater. Even cheaper and better than a PCI card
post #12 of 32
I use these for pretty much any device in the house, they've worked great.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-256-_-Product

Much more flexible then a PCI card, assuming your onboard LAN works okay.

Well maybe i should consider a usb one bc it will give me more space on the inside. If i use one though will it affect my internet speed?

Internet, no. USB is much faster then any internet connection you likely have. USB 2.0 is supposed to be capable of 480 mb/sec.

I think the RJ45 adapters do work a little better though, but that's just me. Don't have to worry about the drivers with them, as long as your onboard LAN works.

nope. USB taxes the CPU 16% of one cpu core out of 8 and is very slow if you have many devices since 480mbit(220mbit REAL LIFE! data rate) is shared. Just for a max of 27.5Megabyte/s (Results not typical and may very from your computer)

Once I started a benchmark(CPU) the USB speed dropped to 0MByte/s lol

Still, it's unlikely a user will notice a drop in their internet connection, which are usually 15mbit or less.

I do think using something that plugs into Ethernet is a better option.

That may be true, but unless you have an insanely fast internet connection, you're not going to notice a drop in speed. Using your 27.5MB/s max transfer speed, you're looking at a 220Mb/s internet connection (actual internet connection speed, not network connection speed). Most I think I've seen is like 65Mb/s download speed. Typical is 5-15Mb/s download.

So no, using USB over PCI/PCI-E will show no slow down in internet speed.

Although I do agree that LAN is easier to setup and the better option if you have it available to you.

Using one of those "gaming" adapters or setting up a WiFi Access Point as a bridge / repeater and connecting it via the ethernet cable to your computer.

Sorry to dig this up, but it appeared in a Google search I was doing.

That Dlink card sucks because it's a 2.4GHz card. Using a unbonded 20MHz channel, data rates will peak at 130Mbps. Bonding two 2.4GHz channels isn't really a good option as you are very unlikely to get 20dB RSSI above the noise floor with all the interference on 2.4GHz.

USB cards are often outperformed by PCI alternatives due to the physical design of the adaptor. Inside a USB adaptor, there will be 3 antenna, spaced very close together, whereas there is more seperation on a PCI bracket with pole antennas.

These will still be beaten by the majority of laptop designs as laptops have one antenna down each side of the monitor, and the third antenna across the top of bottom of the screen.

In answer to the original question, I haven't found anything to match the WPN600N from Linksys... Infact, that's the only PCI card I have found that support dual band 802.11n.
